Heard of that on the news. How strange. Personally, I think Pikachu, Hamtaro, Shin Chan, or Sailor Moon would've been better.

In China, they tend to think of Doraemon as almost part of their own culture. They don't perceive it as a "Japanese product" but rather as a "Chinese product".

That's a first to me, Chinese people absolutely hate Japanese people (at least the older generation). They do watch anime there too tho 😛 I've seen Detective Conan, DB and DBZ, Initial D and Naruto there b4.

Well... it's probably "cultural absorption". And btw, relations between China and Japan weren't always this way. They were pretty friendly in the 80s I think.

Anyways... how popular is Doraemon in Europe and Americas, anyways?

pretty friendly in the 80's ?
🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣

Does "the Mandchurian incident" ring a bell for you ? Tintin and the blue lotus ?
Nanking massacre ?
Japanese invasion on Korea by Hideyoshi and China helping Korea to repel them ?
and before that the invasion attempt of khubilai khan on japan ?
the issue about sovereignity on Senkaku Islands ?
Maoist China against Capitalist Japan ? (for this last point it's pretty complex but even if China has evolved a lot Japan is still considered the ally of united states in the control of asia while China is dreaded as the future competitor . And many south east asian countries resent japan for that . And of course atrocities of the war.... )

You just have to take a look to the scandal of the visit of Yasukuni shrine by Koizumi in the whole asia to see if Japan and China gets along....

China HATES japan and Japan HATES china .
It's the same kind of relationship than France-England maybe even worse... Cause we don't squabble about something as recent as WW2 and we don't argue about territory

To ghinzdra: Hmmm... then you must not have heard about the friendship towns or the Japanese singer(s) who went over to China in the 80s.

But you know... the relations between people may or may not reflect the political motivations of their governments. The recent relations between the 2 countries are more 'cos both the governments are playing up incidents and encouraging nationalistic and right-wing fervor to take hold of their people. Why? 'Cos it's a matter of pride and political bickering. And also a fight over "who is the greater" power, economically, space, and so forth. And some of the factors are likely because of the CCP and also Japan's and China's ties to Russia, North Korea, etc. Another factor for China is so that they can distract the citizens from incidents like Tiananmen, the deepening political, economical, etc., schism within Chinese society, the chaos with Tibet, Afghanistan, etc.

With the recent collapse of societies(worldwide) hence leading to international chaos like terrorism, disillusion of youth, wars, etc, there's rarely such a thing as "diplomacy" anymore. Now countries like India, China, US, etc. crave for prosperity and form ties and so forth out of fear, resentment, jealousy, pride, etc. and not to better relations between their own people or with other countries, etc.

Mehz... I've backtracked enough from the main topic. =/

😲 😲
you mean you assess the friendship between two populations and culture through friendship towns and singers 😕 ?
you're of the nice kind aren't you ? I don't mean it as insult....I'm just really surprised by the sheer sincerity of your statement

Friendship towns come from the initiative of few people.... It would be like assess the feeling of the german population in the 30's through the advice of the Weimar republic goverment.... not really representative 😀
and you can love a singer and hate his country ....
I'm french but I live in japan so I know what I'm talking about ...
There aren't much people in France that don't like english speaking songs but there is a LOTTTTTTTTT of people that don't like America or England or both of them .
for instance my uncle and aunt they love Queen but they really dislike England....
You should have seen them when Londen won over Paris for the latest JO....or the title of the national newspaper when we win the England France in the 6 nations tournament ..... It's a general feeling : we don't hate England anymore but we really dislike them. It's a strong national legacy .
Same goes for Japan
Japanese middle aged woman love "Yon-sama" the korean singer but you should hear what they think about Korea ...it's always a bit surprising to see how a nice fellow can have ugly sides.....

Well sorry for this but I think it's a dangerous misconception to think that China and Japan like each other .... They never liked each other and I doubt it'll ever happen.

Back to the topic : I would have prefered Raito as the anime ambassador of Japan 😀 but well i guess it would'nt be a very good sign for diplomacy 🤣 I guess that's why they choose doraemon it's really a harmess creature ....
