Hello, I'm looking for spoilers, I'm currently reading chapter 90 and so far nothing bad has happened, no characters have died (not even the enemies have died), anything that has gone wrong only happens in flashbacks (or to the enemies), everything just miraculously works out for the main characters, somehow only the main characters ever "get serious" or whatever, gaining a huge power boost while the enemy just gets KO'd.

Does anyone ever die? Anyone permanently lose some / all of their abilities? Does everything always work out in the end?

Makarov isn't dead, he stalled that one guy just before Natsu entered God-mode.

I would bet that people aren't going to start dying until the last few arcs of the manga, if not the last one (at least main characters). In a story like this killing off characters removes any potential story lines you have for them, even enemies. Cool enemies survive to either become allies sometime in the future or come back for another story line. Killing off characters is a waste of potential story and adding new characters solely so they get killed is cheap.

Enemies have died on a number of occasions but the most memorable survive to be used later.

lucy's dad dies though he only really plays a role in one arc

there are indications that at least in an alternate timeline people from FT died
as mentioned above lucy's dad died
some people died at tenroujima (because of zeref, friendly fire, or complete defeat), all of them were enemies

And then... Out of nowhere, when it's least expected... NATSU GETS SHOT IN DA FAAAAYYYCE. And he dies. And then the story starts actually being able to draw out emotions from me aside from annoyance.

whole council was killed, I believe there were some other people that died in the current arc, and well we have dragons again :D

try the side stories ice trail and zero, they are pretty well made (for some people more interesting than the main plot).
