Grinding mmorpgs/Paying for extras

Yknow those games where you find yourself killing monsters over and over again? I dislike Maplestory and other games like that. Where's the fun! You grind, to level up, to get more skills so you can grind some more! Also where they have the whole free to play thing going on, but cool items/extra benefits cost real money. I'd rather pay a monthly fee of like 10$ rather than spending, or getting my other friends to spend 10$ on me a week on the extra stuff so I can keep up with everyone else. I'm a lazy grinder after a while. The whole "defeat the ultimate boss when you're high leveled" doesn't appeal to me. Sure, defeating the boss might be fun to do a few times, but to get to that level, you got to spend a LOT of time playing. Once you played a private server where you can get high leveled in a few hours, and awesome equips, etc, the main game seems stupid. It was hard to do,but I quit mmorpgs and I'm never going back, unless some really kickass game comes along.

Thoughts
?
My ideal mmorpg = pay the product, no extra fees.
Grinding would be boring alone, but in groups
it is okay. I don't mind levelling, but I am quite
lazy at that.
Never ever play hi-rate free private servers, they
will rape your mind.

I like Guild Wars... buy the game, no monthly costs. Also the highest level before the expansion was 20, so every got their pretty quickly and then it became about ability as opposed to who spent the most time killing monster after monster leveling up...

Usually I quit MMO after the grinding goes on for to long. No fun in my opinion. Games that require you to pay are a lot better. WoW has little grinding needed. I think it's just a plan to force people into buying double exp cards so you can level up normally.
Grinding does get boring, that's why they made quests. Like AsdaStory for example. They give so many quests that you'll never have them finished. And the experience gained from quests is about 20 times that of the experience from training. Quests are made so that people can feel like they accomplished something. That way they don't get bored and quit.

I've had grinding take over two weeks just to get up one level, and that is just ridiculous to me, and therefore, I've quit several mmorpgs because of it.

As a hardcore WoW fan, my thoughts are probably biased but since you asked...
The Maple Story thing (game is free, but you have to pay extra for the good/cool stuff) is wrong imo. It should be either free, without the imba items or monthly payement but with lots of extra stuff.
The thing is, the MMO market exploded through the last years, and quite frankly if you don't have a big company for the financial backup, sorry, but you won't make it. Sure, the game might be good, but after a while, somebody else is gonna think of something better, so you'll have to offer something new that beats that (demand and supply). OK, you've done it, great, but you lost quite the summ in the procces, but your players are happy, so it's all good right? Yes, as long as you can meet the standards in the industry, free MMOs are great, but eventually you'll run out of funds and then it's game over. The money they get from selling stuff in free MMOs is often used to cover the bills for servers and people working on the game
You got the picture, it's just the way the market works. If you want to try a good free MMORPG, I would suggest Cabal Online, sure, it's the same thing as Maple, free to play, but for some doodad you have to pay, but out of all the MMOs I have played (WoW, AoC, WAR beta, RO, Maple Story, Cabal, some pirate thing, forgot the name, and one more with witches and brooms, but whatever, was bad anyway) it's the closest you'll get to the big ones.
http://www.cabalonline.com/ <- if you want to check.
But anyway, the point of my rant was: Have fun in what you play, that's why the game was made.

Did the expansion on GW let anyone go past level 20?
I was addicted to several MMORPG's for several years... endless grinding, craving that next level up to catch up to friends. The funny thing is, no one knows how to react to really high leveled players. It's either 'woow awesome...' or 'you have no life...'.
Anyway i've gotten bored of them by now and am doing new stuff - which is a good thing.

I vaguely remember something about it going up to 25, I was only around for the beta test weekend where you got to try out the new classes... gave up on GW shortly after that as it was taking up wayyyy to much of my time =P

So no one really likes grinding (alone). Quests are better? In maplestory, I did the good quests that were worthwhile, but it wasn't enough to level you up.
AsdaStory sounds cool, I like the whole soulmate thing, I might get my friend to play that with me.
CabalOnline seems cool too.
Both of these are f2p but have...extra stuff?
People get inspired by the high levels, or have some rivalry with their friends to keep up the levels and stuff. I admit, I do miss the mmorpgs because it's like you're in your own manga story. It's also not like other games because you have the online social interaction going on.
I wouldn't play WoW because of all the addiction horror stories I've heard from it. My online gaming pal doesn't want to play that because of some...features...actually idk why! He said something about, "non human characters" being dumb or whatever. And he's into the character customization and stuff, and everyone in WoW kinda looks the same. I don't know, coming from a player of MapleStory, where there's tons of extra stuff to customize your character with...Well, I do like the mounts in WoW. Maplestory has some dumb ones, and the level 200 dragon doesn't even fly.
I'm willing to play mmorpgs again, but when it starts sucking up my life, and becomes more of a competition rather than just having fun, I'll quit.
My fav. pc game would have to be Fable, (I haven't tried the Witcher yet because my computer doesn't meet the requirements) It's fun, you're given choices, you can kill whoever you want, you can choose which spells to build up, it doesn't take long to get stronger...etc. Even though it's easy to beat, I had fun playing it. I don't want to play a game that becomes a chore, I want to have a good time. So same thing goes for mmorpgs.

About the addiction stories of WoW (first hand experience 😛 ), no, you won't get addicted (unless you really spend 24/7 at the PC), you get that feeling during leveling because you want to hit max lvl, because only then can you experience all aspects of the game.
It's just that during the summer I had nothing to do, so I had way too much free time. Last few weeks I'm playing less and less, only on the evenings to raid, and on weekends to play arenas (it ends up about 15h per week, not that much). It's all just about how YOU organise yourself and your time, 2-3h per day on evening isn't much, and hell, if you don't want to, you don't have to play. The thing is whatever people want to do, they think they HAVE to do it today, while that's not true.
I hope you upgrade your PC ASAP, The Witcher ia s great game. Also I'd recommend Gothic III (if you try it be sure to update it or you'll want to kill me 🙂 ), it's very close to Fable (you really can go wherever you want, the story is ok, only thing missing is a clear good/bad side, you'll understand this once you play it).

Yeah I know how the summer and those mmorpgs play out. You get bored...it gets hot...you wanna stay inside with the air conditioning. You've got nothing else better to do so why not pick up an online game?
Great way to pass the time. It's just when school starts and you start skipping school and stuff for a game. That's when it gets all...over-the-top. Like this kid dropped out of school for WoW.
Isn't WoW going to end or something? What was that I heard...like the last expansion pack, or whatever?

Hahaha, oh the irony...
I started playing WoW when I was in 3rd grade middle school, and no, I didn't skip school or anything, like I said, it's just how you organise yourself and your time. Never had problems in school because of WoW (only thing that was bothering was lack of sleep on progression nights, but that's a story for another time), not to brag or anything but was top of my class at the end of 3rd and 4th year. I took a break (December '07 - May '08), and you know what? I dropped out of college in the mean time. It wasn't because I started playing again, it's just that I wasn't interested in my major (big mistake on my part last year when I picked wrong 🙁 ).
So, keep a cool head and think about what you're doing, and you should have no problems with WoW (or anything for that matter).
lol, WoW anonymous. 🤣
Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if Blizz decided to end WoW after WotLK, but even if they decide to do so, it won't be for another 3 years minimum, too much $$$ in it.

I think it was that there were two planned for release and this is the last one. If blizzard can make more money off WoW, they will keep releasing stuff for it.
I found that MMOs are too time consuming, I am now playing more of online shooters and fighters.

The game was only about ability during the early and UAX betas and a short time after the release of GW1. With the expansions, it became all about killing things over and over for skills points and rare gear. Faction and those buy-the-pvp-side things came way too late and too poorly implemented to matter.
Level cap will be raised in GW2.
Sigh...I miss this game when it was simple and the PvE was quick, easy, and peaceful to go through. There's too much to do now
