So yeah one of my high school friend who had undergone surgery to lift the tumor in his brain was deemed medically Brain Dead, but his heart still beats eventhough with support devices. Doctor says the heart will still beats naturally (without help from any devices) for another 2 weeks after the Brain Dead judgement which is today. So what do you think?

According to the same doctor chances of medical recovery is 0%. But can we deemed him alive or not? Also will apreciate it if you could post about your opinion about this matter why not and why yes.

damn thats sad . How old is your high school friend? For me, he is dead because he cannot move, he cannot enjoy anything, no happiness, no sadness, no interaction with other humans. Just stuck there, lying on the bed. Even if medically he might be alive, for me he is dead.

We're going to turn 26 this year, he is a few months short from there. Well life is never fair. I lost my brother a couple year back also because of Brain Dead things, differences is he had no tumor just some minor vein in his brain burst so he had what doctor calls internal Bleeding in who in the end disrupt his brain function. Imagine from healthy person to dead in a blink of an eye.

Well life sucks but life goes on, i'm just happy that my brother doesn't need to suffer too badly like my friend here. Not that i'm not sad but....

You have my utter respect.

And to your question, I don't know. We probably don't know
everything about the human brain to make a correct judgment.

Well I does hope so too, but we'll never know won't we. I just hope his family can stick through this. By losing someone close to you, it makes the world seems to loses it's color and shines. So value those close to you now cause no one knows what lies ahead, don't live with regrets cause the most useless word is "What if?"

If he needs a machine to be kept alive with machines, then he is dead. If the body doesn't want to keep going, then it knows it is time to go. Right now, he is probably in a really dark place with nowhere to go. He is alone and afraid in his own wrecked brain. Words may reach him, but he can't return the words, he can't comfort those around him, he can't do anything except listen. I hope he can hear those around them and pass on peacefully and be free of the darkness that is his ruined mind. To leave this world loved is better than leaving it in isolation. He is really lucky to have a friend like you.

It depends on if they're actually 100% Brain Dead or not. There was this study a couple a months ago that proved that like... 15% (or something relatively high like that.) of all brain dead patients actually were able to understand the world around them; they just can't move because they were totally paralyzed. In that case, they are classified as alive. But, if they can't understand the world around them, and the only thing keeping them alive is a machine, that means to me they're dead.

As for your friend, sorry about him. That's depressing.

Sorry about your friend. I know how you feel cause I lost a friend late last year...

As for your question, I agree with what KazukiNezan said. It doesn't seem like he's alive if the machines are the only reason why his body's still functioning.

Im sorry too, must be painful: really makes me sad too.

To answer your question, to me a brain dead person is NOT to be considered "alive". The heart continues to beat, ok but its a kind of "reflex" (a lil current is automatically given by HISS "fibers").

A human is the self conscious being by definition, and the consciousness of course comes from the brain: brain=dead->no longer human.

Im sorry if i look cynical, but in reality i feel really sad.

I'm very sorry about your friend. 🙁 As for your question, even though a person who is brain dead is not biologically dead, if your brain can't process information properly then your body is useless. The mind is who you are and without proper cognitive functions, people deemed 'brian dead' are not truly 'alive' in the way that I perceive living to be.

Yes, in the same way plants are.
As for the person, no.
Alive anyway.

BUMP~

Dead. If the "who they are" part of the brain is dead, then I consider that dead. A body without a mind in just an empty vessel.

That's what happened to my older brother, except what he did was faint after eating too much seafood and hit his head on cement.
