I read a few chapters of it but quickly lost interest, because I couldn't stand the fan service.
But I'm really curious to know if at any point in the story is there a subplot in which there's actual BL.
Or is the BL there just for fan service?

There is no BL development in the manga. If you don't know yet, the author is a BL author herself so expect such chemistry inserted in her story. You can ignore it tho, because the settings make you focus on the two main protags.

I had no idea that author made yaoi. I checked and it turns out I've already read some of her works. Somehow that made me really satisfy.
