Ratings/Comments Helpful?

(quote)Question for y'all: what kind of comments do you find most helpful? Sometimes, when I write my little blurbs, it's hard to say anything specific without giving anything away and lately, I feel like I've been repeating myself... bleh... 🙁
Any suggestions or opinions? (/quote)
I have been considering just making it so you can rate without commenting, because this has been requested a bit. Might help out with having to repeat everything...
I think that would be good. Can you make it so that those who rate can choose whether or not to comment? Is that what you mean?
To the question of what kinds of comments would be helpful?
I think something from your experience while reading the manga. "I nearly wet my pants because it was so funny." Or, "It was really sweet, romantic without being too mushy, and funny without being too silly." LOL! Or, "The action was fantastic!" Stuff like that.
If you're having to give a brief intro, then just mention a main character or two and the main problem(s) he or she is facing. Of course, we don't want you to spoil the plot, so we who read them will forgive you if you hide that info from us. 😀

Partially. I think I'm just going to separate the systems altogether.

yeah they help sometimes, though without it i would probably downloaded or bought lots of manga which i dislike.. what i look for in the comments is the lowest rating to see why they disliked it..
but sometimes the series just have comments with "that series was good" thats it.. doesnt help me at all

Perhaps it would be good to rate whether a comment (which is at most a mini-review) is of use or not. This way it doesn't have the first ones stuck at the end and one might have to search for them. It might have the cream (best) rise to the top. 🙂

The ratings normally aren't worth much. First of all because people don't rate anything that they don't care about. So almost everything ends up at almost 10. Second of all because their are just to few ratings to give any real information. Too often i check a rating and find out only 2 people rated it.
I find the comments more helpfull. Even if someone gives it a 10 and only writes: "Wow, great titties, kick ass action. I wish i could do that triple dragon power kcik" translation: if i were a movie chuck noris would have the leading roll You know to 80% what you are going to get.
Same thing for "It's a really touching story about Naomi's life after her father dies and she changes school. If only that prankster Akira would leave her alone" translation: corny soap opera manga that tries to sqeeze in some drama
I only joined a few days ago, i think i might try to do some more commenting.

So, roughly a year after the last post I come across this when searching for a thread related to my problem: the ratings are usually completely worthless.
I don't understand why the site uses such a large scale. It seems almost the entire mangalist can be found between 6-10. If the average voter even somewhat likes an entry, they give it a nine or ten.
Maybe a rating scale between 1-5 would be more easily understood by voters?

The rating list only shows series that have at least 15 votes...so there's a reason nothing is lower. If it was THAT bad, why get published?

dont actually read most of it....sometimes i do....but i mostly look @ the summary and the pic to see if the artwork is good.

I never even look at the ratings. 🤣 Though I do value the comments... The comments are a factor for me, when I look for new mangas~

I read the comments, just to get a feel of what made the readers attracted to that title. But I disregard the ratings. Even the best manga have such low ratings because of spiteful people rating it with 1's just for the hell of it...

This argument sounds somewhat illogical... all published works are good? zuh?

No, I'm just saying that getting published is the viewer's first line of defense. If a major publishing company decided to publish something, there should be some merit to it...Nevertheless, publishing companies have made very stupid choices before. And some of the smaller ones can't get anything but the bad ones...
There's bound to be plenty of stuff that never got published because they were too horrible. Just be glad you'll never have to see THOSE

When I hear of a new series, I check mangaupdates. The ratings and reviews given are VERY helpful in helping me decide what to get next.
Also, it's helpful having lists online, so that I can keep track of series I'm reading or wish to get.

well usually I look at the synopsis of the manga, the genre and the art (on the cover) and if I like it I download it ^^...
Or if I like a mangaka, I will search for the manga he did and try them ^^
But recently for new manga I had no idea if it were good or not I look at the comments and yeah this is helpful to know why people like it or not... I don't really look at the rating but more at the comments because they are more helpful you know...
you can give a 7/10, but what does it mean for you exactely : some people can give a 7 and say they like it @_@ but what I wanna know is why they like it or not ^^
And humm if there was the possibility to vote only, will the people who comments usually bother to comment again ? I hope so ^^
Thanks ! Keep up the good work! Love you! ^^

*I voted for it definitely help me
If I want to search manga randomly, so, I'll look at the ratings then check out the summary or and art and after that comes the comments
But if I've already a manga in mind...I definitely look at the comments^^
They are very helpful to know what's the positive/negative aspects of the manga...I usually skim the comments and read the long ones...since people who write that are usually the experienced one and have fabulous vocabulary (jealous >.<) They will actually say what's good about the manga and not just "Hey, I like it! AWESOME! give it a try"
I also try to write good comments though 😉 and yeah, I'm one the people who rated all the manga I read and spend time thinking about the ratings I'm about to give
