Furuba will always be one of my favorites, simply because it was the first shoujo I've ever read 🙂
One thing that makes it better than most shoujos at least, is that the plot is pretty unique and original in my opinion. And it was well planned too, unlike some mangas that simply go from one cliche to the next.
As far as shoujo mangas ago, I would consider this one of the best!

It's all that and a big of chips for me.

I'm used to slow-paced manga, but Fruba seems to be one of a few that actually flesh out characters/shed light on something in the meanwhile. While I was a bit surprised at the ending, upon re-reading I realized the mangaka had cleverly been dropping hints about that happening through bits of conversation, so I guess my reaction was a bit heightened due to strong emotions.

I don't see why anyone would be bored with the series, though I understand if some are less patient.

Going to agree with the person that said there's nothing wrong with the anime. I thought was a well-directed, self-contained piece that tied things up well. Of coure, some things don't actually get resolved, but for an anime that had only 4 volumes to work with (while managing to somehow intro 2~3 other characters from later volumes in a timely fashion), I thought it was a good piece of work.

I just do a bit of separating mentally. I never go into anime expecting it to be the same as the manga page by page. I just figure that different mediums call for a different approach.

I cant seem to get into it, although im usually an action fan, shoujos are pretty good, but i think this ones just way to passive and boring to get into x.x
Its just way too overrated since a vast majority of its readers are people who haven't read any other series, and don't have any other standards to compare with it.

I tried my best to stick it out but despite the efforts it made it to the on hold list. if it weren't for all the hype about it i would drop it entirely -.-

Huge generalization there. Though I'm not saying Fruba doesn't come w/ its weak points (what story doesn't?), where does that leave the other percentage, such as myself, who has been reading comics since the early '90s and still loves this series?

I really enjoyed reading Fruits Basket, and I read a lot of manga's, so I have enough to compare it with 😉
it has a good storyline.
Don't think it's the best manga I've ever read though, there are better ones.

Completely agree with Hatsumimi about the generalization there. I have read a lot of mangas and still my all time favourite and on the top of my list is still Fruits basket.I agree that in the beginning there weren't much "action" if you can call it that.. Not much happening and such. But then later on it get's really sad and I like how the characters develop and everything. Though I didn't like the ending since it felt kinda rushed. But just like Hatsumimi said it has it's flaws but what other story doesn't? ;P

Well, for me, it was one of my first mangas so of course I'm going to have a bit of sentimental attachment to it. Though, I agree, there are some out there that are much better, or at least just as good.
I always loved the manga's simple attributes, and how it wasn't completely overworked with drama and annoying main characters. I enjoyed too the fact that the main character had gone through so many hardships, and that she always toughed it out. And I don't mean a tough girl "I'll-fight-you-with-all-I've-got" attitude, but just a humble girl who doesn't dwell in the past too much.
But, sorry Furuba, I've found mangas with much more realistic characters and plot.
This manga certainly isn't in my top 10, though it's still a great read. I completely agree with you 🙂

Though, I'll have to disagree on Hana Yori Dango XD

Well...yeah, it's made out to be more than it really is.
I think the manga is nice and refreshing, it's sweet and romantic, but not the best, I just remember it a lot because it was my first shoujo manga.
Though I can't say it's the best out there.

Is Fruits Basket all that? I've read my fair share of romance manga (this one being the first shoujo, other include I''s, Ichigo 100%, Maison Ikkoku, and others), but I can easily say that Fruits Basket is the best romance manga I read. Other manga have really good stories, and have very touching moments, but Fruits basket had all of that, and then some.

The curse obviously makes this manga stand out. However, it's the back story of the characters affected by the curse that really make this manga great. Other than Saikano (which is just made to be depressing), Fruits Basket sent me on more of an emotional roller coaster than any other manga. Most back stories (especially Hatori, Momiji, and Rin) are very well done and causes an array of emotions to arise.

However, it is not jsut sad and touching. It is also hilarious. Love Hina and Maison Ikkoku may still be above Fruits Basket in terms of comedy (in my eyes), but it is only slightly ahead.

It is also an amazing cast of characters. Every character had their own unique trait, and although it is impossible to create a completely original cast of characters, it is still one of the best cast of characters I read in a manga.

So, is Fruits Basket the best manga ever? I don't know, probably not. It's certainly not my favorite (that belongs to 20th Century Boys), but in comparison to other manga of its genre, I would probably rank it very high.

its good, but not that good. i think a lot of people make it way better because it is the first shoujo they read, ang glorifies it a lot.

It was my first shojo. I'll say this, it has more cross appeal than the rest of the few shojo I've read. Also, the story is a unique (far as I can tell) and refreshing change of pace. A few plot twists and a satisfying ending make up for the rest of the praise it gets. Is it good, yes. Is it the Holy Grail, no.

That could be true. Shoujo and shounen are aimed at two different demographics. So if someone is used to reading Shounen only, reading this would be different.

I know that when I was reading this, I didn't think about the fact that it's shoujo. I just looked at it as a manga, and romance manga at that. As I said, I read my fair share of romance (Ai Yori Aoshi, Apollo's Song, Bitter Virgin, Hatsukoi Limited (my least favorite manga overall), I''s, Ichigo 100%, Koi Kaze, Limlim Kiss, Love Hina, Maison Ikkoku, Suzuka, a few that are still ongoing, and a few others that might be considered romance, but I don't necessarily label them since it isn't the main selling point). Those are mostly Shounen with a couple seinen thrown in. Even though Fruits Basket is the first shoujo I read, I still consider myself to have an abundant knowledge of the romance genre. Even then, I still rank it very high, if not above the rest. So, that's why I think in terms of romance manga, Fruits Basket is one of the best.
