I was under the impression that groups could not post on mangaupdates if they put their manga behind a paywall, so why does crunchyroll get to do it?

I'm sure this has been explained in previous threads on the subject, but...
Releases that are solely available behind a paywall are not allowed on MU, but releases that are freely available to the public have always been allowed, even if the group keeps other releases behind a paywall (or makes private releases in some other fashion). See Wild Fang Project for one example.
The crunchyroll releases are freely available to the public at the time they are listed, and so they are acceptable.
