I wondered about this question because here, in Slovakia, you can´t buy nothing like comics or manga (maybe you can find something but you must try really really hard...). And when someone hears word "comics", he often thinks only about those for children. And when some of my friends hears word "manga" he asks: "What´s that? Some kind of fruit?"
I, personally, found about them only few years ago thanks to internet (thank God for internet...)
So I was curious if there are more fossils like me ^_^

Well, the internet contributed but I've known about them since I could remember.
Internet just initiated me to read them.

Similar to the other poll, so pretty much the same anwser:

I decided to watch Naruto when it first came out on Cartoon Network. By Episode 100 or so, I was so addicted that I tried finding more episodes online, which led me to the Japanese anime, which consequently lead me to the manga x). Then last year, I met my friend who collected manga. So she would bring me all her shojo mangas (and seeing how she had over 300 volumes, it took me a while to get through them all >.<) and eventually I got moar addicted. So then I looked for moar manga to read, and decided to watch/read Bleah cuz it was so popular and then after a while I just got real addicted to all manga shizzy.

All in all it was a mix of Cartoon Network and my friend x)

yeah, it is similar, but I thought about if you even knew that manga exist...not who made you read them. I wanted to know if there are some people who found out only recently that they exist. Because I know about them maybe...for one or two years? I am really jealous of people who can go out and buy them if they want to... 🙄

Um... shouldn't this be in Manga General?

The general response would still be the same, cause people will still just post who made them read manga if someone really did make them...and tell stories of how they got into manga if they found out themselves...

If you really didn't want to involve people who found out through others, then what was the point in the second option in your poll? Also there's an "other" option on the other thread for people who discovered manga not from friends or family and probably elaborate on it...

Ah well then, I hung out with a group in 6th grade who loved/drew manga and anime so I guess I that's when I found out about it. However, as a kid I used to watch DBZ, but I had no idea that it would be classified as anime x).

hmm...but I really have got one friend who seriously asked me if it´s some kind of fruit...^_^ I´ve already been thinking about her IQ though......

Heh, it's the same in Russia. Why are we Slavs so prejudiced against comics? Blame it on the Cold War, I guess, and thanx God for the Internets. 🙂

...There exists, however, a thriving Russian anime/manga fans subculture which had a little success with breaking into the mainstream. I've seen some volumes of Gunslinger Girl, Ai Yori Aoshi, Ranma 1/2 and Faeries' Landing (translated into Russian) around the big and medium bookstores. Altho' it's still to take root, I'd say.
