i think the trick is to find someone else who likes manga.... then you can let each other down, but you'd both kind of understand and roll with it from there

I agree with daed. You should find a guy that likes bishoujo manga, and then you can both try to appease each other by adopting a bishoujo/bishounen look/personality, respectively.

It should work in theory, right? ;D

You're not the only one, or else stuff like CHEESE! and Margaret wouldn't be so popular.

I think I caught a bit of luck and was exposed to manga much earlier as a kid (mid-90's). I had a lot more time to get hit and let sink in the reality that a lot of guys you meet are, more or less, like the asshats you find in seinen comics.

Though there are plenty of guys like Aki, from Kano Hito ya Tsuki, and that's shoujo.

Um, well, I don't really think that thats the fault of manga.... I mean, what do you consider to be expectations? No one is perfect, even in manga, and so basically what most shojo manga says is that that doesn't matter. If you love or like the guy enough, who cares if he has a few flaws?

I think you just haven't met enough guys. Most bishounen are kind of overrated, and besides, this is manga- meant to be larger than life. Honestly, there are a lot of guys out there who are better than an over-inflated bishie, who usually has all sorts of angsty emotional baggage anyway 🤢 Everyone has flaws in real life, just like you do.

Having said that, there is nothing stopping you from going out into the world and finding your perfect bishounen. I just wish you luck...

It would be freaky if shoujo and RL were similar, what with all the guy worship and OH-am-I-beautiful-bishies? Though RL isnt always great but trust me, a really nice guy with average looks actually beats any shoujo bishie any day...though if you find the right one(s)...

I've never even considered this an option, looking for someone who is similar to something that I've read. Most likely because I'm a somewhat grounded individual, as well as an avid horror novel reader (who'd want a bf like one of those characters?). Getting into manga hasn't changed my selection of possible partners, nor my expectations of relationships, into something unrealistic.

I don't think anyone compares manga characters with their boyfriends or girlfriends. But everybody has an ideal type. Raeryn is right. Liking any character won't change what their ideal type is. People have a type before liking certain charaters. That's why we get different answers in the "who would you choose as your bf/gf?" thread. Aren't all the bishoujo/bishounen supposed to be attractive? But you don't like all of them. You only pick the type who's attractive to you. It's similar to in real life, you are only attracted to certain people.

yeah there's something wrong with even wanting a rapist as a bf. I mean, this is a pretty screwed up topic. 50 percent of shoujo guys are jerks with almost little personality aside from that.

There's plenty of nice, relationship focused guys. Shouldn't be hard to find one a girl can spend time with.

Course, it should be acknowledge that people will always misunderstand other people, and create expectations that are just waiting to be shattered.

Thinking about this topic a little more. I think the problem might be less the expectations of the guy, and more the problem of expectations of the relationship.

How a relationship plays out, what a person should do. even what emotions are appropriate throughout a date. I can see a person that reads too much manga getting a wierd image of that.

i do agree with the ideal type ur talking about.. but the main topic of the thread was about having unrealistic expectations based on manga characters, which is essentially comparing every possible real-life candidate with a manga prototype.. and to that i said ive never even considered comparing 😉

hehe, even Welcome to the NHK is less disfunctional than my relationships! 🙂
Shoujo boys annoy me though, the only people I know who were that pretty and well-spoken in real life turned out to be manipulative fcks... or really boring and clingy..
meh
can't win!

If they don't have manga characters as ideal, they will still get the ideal elsewhere. But I don't think people will compare manga characters with their actual girlfriends and boyfriends because when they have met the right person, they will probably forget all the ideal and stuff. lol

@centzon totochtin
My bf is good-looking and well-spoken. Thank god he's not a manipulative freak. 😮

before realising its the right one.. you have to do some getting to know which will be relatively impossible if she/he fails the comparison test..
but i do completely agree that when you start doing nothing of this sort matters, you just do it 😃
