I fall under the "unintentional, but it happens anyways" category. I had realllly short hair a while back, and for days when I wore baggy clothes (like sweats) I ended up being mistaken as male. I didn't care, I thought it was interesting how people treated me. Once I was in the restroom washing my hands, and a preteen girl came in. We made eye contact for a few seconds, then she turned around and walked out. xD

Once for halloween I was the white rabbit from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, so then I was also dressed as a male. A male with bunny ears and a tail. (;

Though society has a double standard; it seems it's more acceptable for females to cross dress than males. :/

I did it lots of times as a joke and sometimes unintentionally.

In carnival it's common here for men to crossdress, aside from carnival here there are parties in wich crossdressing is required

Unintentionally:

My face was naturally girlish so when I let my hair grow long and straight (my hair was strange, I could make it straight or curly without using any kind of product, I just needed a brush) and didn't have my usual dark circles in my eyes(my face gets 60% manlier with them). I was often mistaken as a girl, to the point I was once hitten on by a guy in a party ...I just said "What?" and then he probably noticed I was the most flat-chested girl he had ever seen and also had the rougher girl voice he had ever heard, he raised his hand in a signal of "sorry" and disappeared.

Luckly as this year went on my hair got curlier(yay) and my face isn't as girlish as before(yay²) , so now it's nearly impossible for me to be mistaken again. 😀

My brother though, awhile back he was often mistaken as a girl, he had long hair - a little past his shoulders- and he had a baby face, it happened that once while we were working on our dad's videostore a drunk guy walked in and just started babbling, then he looked at him and said:

Sometimes, though they are mostly unintentional. I just tie my hair up and wear a hat and everyone thinks I'm a guy.

I did cosplay as Ash from Pokemon though (when I had shorter hair) and my friends said I really did look like Ash (>.<). My hair is longer now so no one mistakes me for a boy anymore...

i agree with the op's point on how crossdressing is a bit of a double standard for guys and girls.
These days it is completely acceptable for women to wear clothes traditionally thought of as being for guys eg. baggy sweatpants, jeans, sneakers etc. girls dressing that way dont even get a second glance from the public.
Contrary to this, typical womens clothing such as skirts, tights, high heels etc. are viewed as being only for women and men who wear such clothing are automatically assumed to be gay and are often strongly prejudiced against.

i happen to have a gay friend who most people would classify as a crossdresser. he is very flamboyant and wears heels, tights, dresses and makeup out in public and he's told me quite a few stories about how he's been treated by people (things like people refusing to look him in the eye, or ignoring his requests for service etc)

I used to dress as a female when I was younger and used to be in a few plays. I used make up and everything, me with lipstick was weird lol. Though as others have said there is a double standard and any male that cross dresses is label as "Abnormal", for lack of a better word, but i don't have a problem with anyone dressing as the opposite gender. Some of my friends have done it for fun and can pull it off pretty well and I admire any man that can dress up and pull off being a female, that has to take some much damn work lol.

When I was younger, yes, although not intentionally (as in wanting to look like a boy).
I had a tomboy streak in me. I hated dresses, skirts and heels (I still hate heels - most uncomfortable footwear ever) and I preferred trousers and trainers etc. I still wear those types of clothes, but they're made for women, so like, tighter fitting showing off your curves and whatnot. When you're a kid, it wasn't really labelled as boys/girls (apart from the obvious girls and boys clothing).

I never viewed it as cross dressing though. Simply comfort. I would like to think that it's not only men who can wear baggy trousers and hoodies.
