I recently watched the anime of FSN and when I looked a bit up about it on wikipedia I saw that it originally was a game. Now I'm interested if anyone of you has played it and I have some questions:
Is it still enough fun playing the game when you already know the anime?
And more important: How much Japanese do you have to know to play it?

PS: thx to Deadfire and his avatar for reminding me of this great anime 😀

The game was made by type-moon I think, the same that made Tsukihime.
Tsukihime (the game) has already been translated, and Fate/Stay Night is in the works by the same that made that translation. I think last I checked they where arround 1/3 complete.
And of course the game is probably very intersting to play even after watching the anime. (But be warned the game is an Eroge)

You are welcome for the reminder 😛

Anyways what Stealth said is right the game is not fully translated yet, I've played the game however I had no idea what was happening as I couldn't read what was going on. That was years ago. The people that are translating it have a Demo up I think.

There are 3 campaigns in the game, each with a different telling of the story. THese are "Fate","Unlimited Blade Works", and "Heaven's Feel" The anime borrows heavily from the Fate scenario, with select segments from Unlimited Blade Works included as filler while only a couple nods are given toward the Heaven's Feel option

There is also "Fate/hollow ataraxia" which is a add-on to the main story

Mm, yeah, TYPE-MOON's anime tend to be quite uh, cut-off from the storyline. They just try to give you the most in the least time, I guess. That was the case with Tsukihime... the anime was alright, but the game was x10 better in my opinion. I would imagine F/SN would follow the same order...

And yeah, the games by TYPE-MOON tend to be eroge (With exception of Melty Blood, which was a co-work of TYPE-MOON and Watanabe Productions (Or French-Bread, I think they changed it to that.)

I wish the translation comes out soon, for both Melty Blood and F/SN. Ahh. I wonder if there are any Melty Blood players here at BU.

The game is great and the plot is better than in anime. I need to get my hands on the sequel : Fate/Hollow-Antraxia

Thanks to all for the replies. I guess I'll have to wait untill the translation is done 😐
Is Tsukihime in the same genre as FSN?

Fate uses the Kirikiri engine, so it is compatible with Anime Games Text Hooker which makes it playable if you're motivated. See my post in the bishoujo game thread.

As Deadfire mentioned, insani made an english-version demo which got me very hyped over playing it. They're not going to translate any more complete games I think, though they have been releasing demos and many short novels.

But, you should play Tsukihime first. As others have mentioned, it's been completely translated and the patch can be obtained from mirrormoon. They're working on Fate/stay Night as well, and have completed the Fate route translation/editing/insertion(roughly 1/3 of the game). See their site for details.

To be able to play FSN without a hooker/translating tools, you should be strong in kanji and be able to look up those you don't know. If you're just relying on the Japanese you've learned from anime, and you can't read manga raw, it'll be very hard. There are manga with a lot of furigana that makes learning kanji easier(like Airgear) so you can translate it as you read. I personally see eroge to be easier to learn Japanese from than manga since you can usually hook all the text and have it in a form easy to look up or translate, plus most games in recent years are fully voiced.

What a bump this is.

Since the game has finally been fully translated, what do you guys think?

I haven't finished any route yet, but so far I like it. Story so far isn't as good as Tsukihime, but the art, music and bits of animation are a real upgrade, imo.

Well, IMO, the UBW route was the most...fulfilling.

Since you can get both Rin and Saber in the normal ending. and that is just...AWESOME. Plus, the true ending is quite cute

I liked Fate almost as good as UBW, but the story wasn't as fully developed (being the first route and all..)

Heaven's feel on the other hand... I can't believe I looked forward to it.
It was pretty terrible IMHO. The endings....

Normal ending was depressing as heck. The true ending...shiro was drawn so badly o_o. But at least adult Rin was pretty good and so was Rider. But I just can't accept the end relationship. Sakura was too dark for my tastes I guess :\

All in all a good game. I particularly liked the history behind the characters and weapons - quite informational =P Now all that is left for me is to get all the Taiga Dojo's >_>

There are 3 scenarios: Fate, Unlimited Blade Works and Heaven's Feel.

Fate has one ending, UBW has two endings and Heaven's Feel has three endings. A total of six.

Cool seems I will have much more to go through then I thought. I'll get back to it once I get over Fate's ending. Man this is Tsukihime all over again. Why can't Type-Moon make a game with a happy ending?

Yeah i agree with Scy completely... i got through HF after waiting about a year for it after UBW and i was disappointed to the point where the fail was so contagious when i went to facepalm i poked my eye once.
