From a legal perspective, know that licenses can vary widely. You almost always will have to get your hands on the actual license to know the particulars, and if it's a deal between to private companies, you're going to have a really hard time getting that unless they decided to publish it.

It is not uncommon for licenses to persist even after the financial failure/bankruptcy of a company. Often such licenses will be viewed as assets that creditors can go after, which has lead to some interesting grabs over the years.

In more modern big name deals, you will find that they are not at all transferable, but that the business may be kept at some level of "alive" so that a creditor and garnish royalties. Of course, it's also not uncommon to have bankruptcy void the license (or other terms of default).

My problem is the manwha know as The Boss(Jjang). Adv has published 3 volumes but while realizing that ADV has folded and has not sold the publishing rights for English distribution as far as I know I also found release dates for volume 4 - 6 but those are no where to be found for purchase let alone volume covers.

She we say Adv Vol 1-3 or Adv 1-6? How do we handle companies that stopped at a certain volume or year after the fact they had made plans for more releases?

Well, if you ask me for my objective opinion, we should set some guidelines on how to approach the problem. My proposal is that:-

1. We scanlate into English since English is the current lingua franca of the world and the raws are already in Japanese or Chinese (Tsumi ni Nureta Futari has its remaining raw of about 20 chapters in Chinese out by now for example)

2. If a company releases a license or drops a project, we scanlate it as long as they aren't translating into English. This will keep them on their toes. We could give them say 6 months leeway before we start. Same for if a group drops a project. So anything over 6 months without a single release is game. It just means the company isn't really that interested and is just playing safe and selfish.

3. Finally, we scanlate all manga despite the silly and selfish licensing and provide it to people. We just need to have a system to identify that the readers are from poorer regions, since stuff printed in the first world countries isn't cheap for third world or developing country's citizens. Also, we should consider the fact that some countries can't even access these manga normally, say an ultra religious country might take even kissing as bad content (I know mine does, and they censor it on TV too). Since it can't be bought anyway, the mangaka can't profit from it either, and the publishers are already making money from other countries. Just place a note in you scanlation to buy the manga if they liked it once they can (I know I would).

So I say we do it. This way, we can make things fair and just for everyone. The Internet was first created for sharing information and research, etc. not for selfishly greedy profits by publishers who won't even translate stuff properly with enough effort or intention. I say we start something to support the mangakas we like financially, independent of publishers, that people can choose which mangaka to donate to for which manga and forget about selfish publishers. In the first place, it's the manga and mangaka that we like, not the publisher, and in truth, it's the publisher who gets most of the money, and the authors get very little.

Your version is logically sound lambchopsil but i would leave the field with YES and impute "License Expired" after the volume Information in the correct box as i assume that users look at the filed to figure out if an alternative to a scanlation or the lack thereof is available.
Your version would also cause problems with the field” License Options” in our search function. That said i don´t think that a perfect solution can be found. Hello from the year 2015 btw.

Recently, I have purchased a manga series that was somewhat currently in print, but it takes a really long time for the retailer to receive all the print volumes before they can ship them all to me in 1 full package.

Currently waiting on said package now. It's been a month since purchase.

I would like to see whether the license for a certain manga series is still valid and in continuation.

Licensed manga: manga that has been published in US where you can buy the english version via online shops or bookstores. Scanlation groups can get into legal problems if they keep scanlating the licensed series. But some famous series are still scanlated eventhough they are licensed.
Unlicensed manga: manga that has been published in Japan but not available in US. These are the ones usually scanlated and you can read them freely.

Its just dissapointing to figure out that the series that you are really into is not being released anymore and its not like there is anything that you can do unless you understand Japanese and buy the volumes raw and I don't know Japanese so its making me really sad knowing that it had a good story but I will never be able to see the rest of the series,. Guess I'll just have to learn Japanese then, and the series that im relly wanting to finish are Itsuka Tenma No Kuro Usagi and Kanojo no Kagi wo Akeru Houhou but when I was trying to find a series that I wanted to reread being [m] Kiryuuin Kaya ni Chi o Suwareru Dake no Kantan na Oshigoto I couldn't find any information about or around it. So can somebody help me out if possible if not its understandable and have a great day.

You can try to find a group that scanlates similar series and ask them to pick up a series. Learning Japanese is an option as well, and a useful pursuit at that.
