Does anyone cringe upon hearing this line? This line is a staple in shounen manga. Maybe it sounds cooler in Japanese and just doesn't translate well.

"If you hurt my friend, I won't forgive you!"
"I definitely won't forgive you!"
"I will never forgive you!"
"You are the only person I won't forgive!"
etc.

The moment I hear that phrase a wave od disappointment flows through me. I thought the series was going to be different but it's still the same chiché. A part of me dies and slowly but surely my expectations on manga declines.

sounds like a staple line in shoujo manga too, where from then on it all goes cliche and boring and you know what... 😮

Well...it's not just in shounen. "If / because you (insert action here) I will never forgive you!" is a staple in stereotypical manga of pretty much any genre.
And it's not just manga, either. A lot of fictitious stories have that line or some variation of it. It's nonsensical and annoying, no matter what context it's used in. I can't help but roll my eyes whenever I hear / read that kind of comment.

But of course, there's no use complaining about it here...

like the fact that men cant control themselves alone in a room with a [atractive] female
and they get all angry coz she does not realize herself how cute she is
he is a man after all so he can lose control at anytime and rape her

or that most guys in shoujo behave like creepy rapists [xpt the hero]

not to mention official english translations [of pretty much all shounen/seinen] that are full of swear words

Eeeeh - I actually like this line. Sure, it can be halfarsed translation, but I think it has a good sense of gravity about it. It depends on where it's been used, but the general sense of certain things being unforgivable is pretty serious and, I think, interesting.

Although yeah - it's a bit unnatural sounding, and if it's just thrown in casually then it sounds like a child's 'I'll hate you forever!' kind of thing.

I don't think I have ever heard this phrase in real life during a conversation between people. Aikanaro, is right, it's used as a literary device for dramatic effect.

it was cool in my first 5 animes and manga.. but then i found it so stereotypical that everytime i read it now i laugh so hard at it that i cry heck i even mock the line...

you just hear it everywhere it is in any and almost every manga manhua/ manhwa... so cliche.. but sometimes if you consider the situation and it seems like its a fresh attempt at it then its slightly okay but i wouldnt ever say that it was original..

The line is a staple, but it gets old quickly. Hence, which is why I tend to read manga where the guy is a dick and only cares for his own ass. It's a lot funnier that way too.

The thing with "I won't forgive you" is that it doesn't even sound like a threat but it's used as one. The fucking bad guy doesn't want your forgiveness or gives a damn about it. Since it is usually used in cases where a "nakama" (as the shounen calls them) is hurt.

"I will kill you", "I'll kick your ass", "You will pay", etc. sound more like threats to me (more natural).

cringe? nope.
i don't pay too much care about wordings in shounen manga. they don't offer depth, generally, so i control my expectation about it. in seinen manga, this type of line is well placed, so it got some nice effect on the reader side.

grammar mistake is intentional, grammar nazis need their entertainment.

I'm pretty sure "I won't forgive you" isn't used nearly half as frequently as the manga world seems to think, so I'm also of the opinion it is used as a plot device to convey the gravity of the situation in the absence of an epic soundtrack, handy internal monologuing or author's observations.

Gambatte is used all the damn time. My students translate it literally though, so keep telling me to fight. I had to beat it out of them (not literally, in case you were concerned).

The pen is mightier than the sword...and considerably easier to write with.

I honestly didn't know it was a cliche haha. I thought it was one of those cultural aspect of Japan or a Japanese phrase translated to be like that....?? Oops...maybe not. I dunno. I honestly don't really care. It depends on the context on where the phrase is used. Sometimes it's effective, sometimes a death threat might be better.

I've seen this before and knew it was a common phrase. I didn't realize--as this thread seems to say if I understand correctly--that the variations of it are just translations of one set Japanese phrase/word that holds a lot more meaning than it does in English. After looking at this thread I was reading Shibatora again and I realized how often the protagonist says it.

Ugh. I was just talking about this the other day with my friend. It especially annoys me when a guy is dating a cute chick, and all the guys who see them together are like "I won't forgive him for dating her!". So stupid.
