Bonba! by Osamu Tezuka is a pretty solid one from 1970! About a teenager who can summon the spirit of a horse that his father rode in the Japanese imperial military, and he uses it to countless nefarious ends. Definitely more in the Japanese mystery-horror vein, but other than some other obvious ones (Urotsukidouji, anything by Hideshi Hino, Suehiro Maruo, Kazuo Umezu, Kanako Inuki) that was among the first that sprang to my mind.
