Hayao Miyazaki where the venerable animator confesses that if their upcoming Arietty the Borrower doesn’t do well in the box office, plans are already in place to shut down Studio Ghibli.

It'll probably do well. I mean he's quite popular, even in America.

It should do well, even on Miyazaki's credibility alone. It would be a shame if it does close though... I mean a studio that has given us such classics. Lately, I've been enjoying more of the Madhouse productions (e.g. summer wars) and haven't seen any of the recent Ghibli ones though...

They're making a movie of the Borrowers?!
Well, they have my ticket.
To be honest I can't imagine a Studio Ghibli movie could do particularly badly.

No offense, but if the studio were really doing quite that well, this would be a non-issue. In any case, it may not be a matter of doing badly, per say, but rather just not exceptionally well.

Ponyo was sort of a bust, so I can see where this is coming from. Honestly, Ghibli hasn't been terribly impressive since Sen to Chihiro. I doubt it'll dissipate though. It's sort of an integral part of contemporary Japanese pop culture- heck, Totoro still hits the top of Japan's domestic anime DVD sales. All that said, I'd be surprised if this is the end, even if Arietty doesn't look like a terribly impressive film.

Life without Ghibli films = 😢
It would be a big shock if they really did close.
Even if the films aren't all big hits, I still think it's worth them making more, unless they really do go under financially.

Isn't this the guy who twice claimed that he was in the process of making a "last" film? If I recall correctly he said that he was going to retire after both Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away. And then he came out later and was like, "Oh, by the way, I'm a workaholic. K'thx. More films on the way."

Even if Ghibli closes (which I think unlikely), he'll be sticking around, I think. Considering his status in the industry, some other studio would be thrilled to pick him up.

Miyazaki can't be making the Ghibli movies forever. (he's going to die eventually) And they are making some attempts to get new directors...but Tales of Earthsea was a failure. (in my eyes anyway) The Borrowers is an another attempt from a new director, but if it does badly then maybe they concluded that the studio is just going to go down with Miyazaki and Takahata.

Still, I think its unlikely they are actually closing...

It's very, very unlikely. The studio is too popular and makes too much money to be closed just like that.

I completely and totally agree.

If they do shut down, however, it'd suck in a major way. Ghibli has certainly released many great films, and it would be a shame to see it go.

I certainly hope they don't, but time will tell I guess...
