i'm a high schooler, and today we had a talk about careers in class.
i'm still undecided 😕 about that, but just curious at what careers are out there.

i consider myself pretty okay with art---although probably lacking a little creativity 😕 ? and in love with manga/anime/videogame (like final fantasy&kingdom hearts) and etc.

i don't want to be one of those people who does something they hate for the rest of their life and then regret it.

any career ideas?

Even if you get a career doing something you love, you'll end up hating it eventually, or more than likely, you'll end up poor. Which, hey, you might not mind being poor, but if you have a family in the future, they probably will.

Might as well plan a future doing something you are good at and doing something you love, like art, part time or as a hobby.

Money is always a problem when you're in the art industry, I think...

By the sounds of it, you might wanna look into the games industry like I did.
The art guys in the industry probably don't get paid as much as the programmers and managers, but I think the pay is quite nice, PLUS you get to work with what you like...(well that kinda depends on who and what you're working on) Also, you don't have to stick to just games, you could branch off to animation, 3D animation and even manga/comics!
I'm like you, basically.
At the moment, I'm concentrating on being a concept artist.
I'm actually fortunate enough to be working on a project with the anime/manga style so it's quite a blast.

The key is passion.

Quote from Adrock Thurston

Don't ask for it.
Go out and win it.
Do that and you shall succeed 😛

Obviously you're gonna need to work on your creativity. That just requires lots of practice.
But when you think about it, when it comes to art, that's what it's all about;
Practice, practice, practice!

I hope this has been of some help to you.

I have a lot of artist friends (actual majors, not just hobbies), and they enjoy what they do. First, make sure you're not just decent or ok, since it's a very competitive area. Also, money is an important issue; many artists don't make very much. And enjoy it, since if you actually go through with a career in art, you'll obviously have to be creating artwork almost every day for most of your life.

if you are considering a career based on what i would term natural talents like art(which i am useless at) then you need to be frigging good as at it. Like seriously if you are just above average then it won't work, you have to be really really really good. I have had friends who I thought were pretty damn good at art but they just coulnd't compete with the best out there. Its really competitive and hard work can only get you so far. Also as calibine said most likely unless you are like one of the best, you probably won't get good amounts of money. games be the best option as you can get through that and find good paying jobs with hard work and some talent. Depends really, are you aiming to get rich? Is money a big factor for you?

Well, if you're really really good, you can be a freelance artist, advertise yourself on dev art and do commission for a while until someone hires you. Like Endling did.

An artist for a gaming industry would also be a good idea. You can be a 3D animator or concept artist. Though as a concept artist, your creativity is your biggest asset.

3D for movies is picking up so you might also wanna start studying how to do it.

Never go into animation for anime. I've heard to pay is low, and given the high cost of living in Japan, it would be pretty hard.

I know that a lot of these comments seem negative, but people are just being honest about what you should expect if you choose to work as a self-employed artist. The most stable situation for an artist is to have a day job and pursue your passion part time. Another option is to look for a career that is related to your passion (i.e. if you like writing you could work as an editor, or if you like visual arts you could teach / work as a curator, etc...).

Really though, why not ask your guidance counselor for advice? Schools have access to questionnaires that are often really helpful in directing students towards careers they might be interested in. Also think about taking co-op. You can get a credit, and co-op positions are great for helping you decide. Plus if you're going to be applying for a fine art-related degree/diploma program later on it looks great on your application.

Good luck.
