depends very much on what type of game it is
JRPGS i usualy go with some of my favorite characters from manga
Dating Sims ...usualy my own name written in katakana[atleast my first name]

pen and paper rpg i usualy name my characters after favorite hockey players[from when i was growing up]

Offline games I just keep it default. For online FPS, I prefer something fun and not "in-your-face" type of name. I usually stick with D4z3D; if someone gets offended or pissed at that then I think they need some therapy, lol. As for MMOs I've been favoring Agni and Rudra (from Devil May Cry 3) lately.

I choose some random letters that sound or look nice when they are in a line, but the names usually contain one m or a cause these are my favourites letters 🙂

Hum... it depend on what sort of game... if it Rune factory (sort of farming, RPG) i use the name Rayan... it not mine but i take it for fun and for online game at least one of my character is named Frank93, it my nickname with my birth year, so i really doubt someone else than me take it. In pokemon I take the one of the default name (hint: not red)

I used to have random names for the character when i was younger.
But at one moment i sticked to one name cuz i didnt rlly play any other games.
But recently i have used japanese names.
Wanted to use anime/manga character names but they are normally taken so i made up a name/names.
Like: Tegari, Terumi, Nareki.
Mostly use Tegari now. 😛

Lightmare
Lucifer
Dawn
Lucifer Dawn / Lucifer_Dawn
Nathan
Hellspirit

I generally use Trina. She was originally a character I used for rps, but then just sorta evolved. She's a mercenary, though, so if I want to play a mage or tank I have to use a different name.

If I don't use Trina, I like weird sounding names. Like Yana or Tosh.

If I have a guy character, which I sometimes do, I just again do the weird sounding names, although I've noticed that for guys most of my favorite names start with J.

Does the walker choose the path, or the path the walker?

I use defaults when the character has one. I also have a few names I use if the character does not have a name, like Rabin, Wuta, or Celas.

for offline games i using the name that a character already has, for online games i usually stick with my own name (Margaretha), though sometimes i use the names in my favorite manga/anime characters

Um..... Kind of random I suppose personally..
I have some names that travel across games, sometimes it's random sounds I push together to be a name (Sumasuun for example) and sometimes it's the default name. It all depends on how I'm feeling at the moment.

If it's a casual game, mog. My account name is always mogiks. Otherwise probably some sort of fantasy name. I write fantasy so I often draw from the names of my major characters (I use Luka a lot), or anything I like the sound and the spelling of. Occasionally I'm feeling humorous so I might do something with a pun. I like doing this in Pokemon especially when I name the guy who you're always competing with, or with any of the Pokemon I catch. Sometimes I get a bit carried away and these turn into really obscure in-jokes relating to other fandoms or one of my own stories, or a foreign language pun or some sort of mockery of one of the character's attributes.

I think the only time I used the default was in FFX when you had an option to change Tidus's name, but it's so iconic I didn't want to.
