Google OS

I heard about this and thought... meh.
I don't (and do not plan to) use a netbook. It's interesting news for the market but I'm not expecting too much. The web browser was a little dissappointing --- fast but limited.
Can you imagine an imaginary menagerie manager imagining managing an imaginary menagerie?
why? its just another OS... i use a mac so i guess i dont really care... 🙄

I'm not too surprised about this move from Google, pretty much saw it coming. Since it's for netbooks only I doubt I'll be using it.
@ mique
I know what you mean. Google is developing a software monopoly. It's vast e-fingers are dipped in everything nowadays.

Google is trying to take over the world,
just like Microsoft in the old days. 🤣

I guess if you're looking for simple fuss-free interface, you'd want one. It's like Google Chrome the web browser; very minimalistic. I find the browser inadequate for my browsing purposes, which is why the OS is for netbooks I guess.

You guys are looking at this all wrong. Think of the innovation that Google will bring. I think a lot of great ideas are going to come from the OS, as with the browser, at minimum.
Well, at least Google is getting support/attention from the computer companies such as Asus, Acer, HP and Lenovo.

There's a difference, Docco.... it's open source.
Anyways, it seems quite promising for netbooks and ARM-based devices, rather than being a "full-on" FOSS OS like Debian or Fedora
However, a purely cloud based OS can't work on it's own (for now, at least). Nobody wants their data to be purely online. This OS will need to run applications, and store data, locally as well as in the cloud.
I've always been skeptical on cloud based computing, but if anyone takes a minute to analyze the market, it's a pretty logical form of progression.
It's nice to see giants like Google and Intel (with their Moblin platform) bringing competition to the market by adopting open source solutions instead of locking everything like Microsoft and Apple do. Good luck to them.

Wait wait, I really don't understand much about technology and all that, but wouldn't it be a bad idea to store everything on the net?
Or maybe that's just my uneducated opinion. 😐

Worry not, Kashi, for I'm way more uneducated than you are. 🤣
The basic idea is that with Google OS being targeted at devices like Netbooks or ARM-based devices (maybe fancier type smartphones and tablet-like devices) which don't offer much internal storage space, you'll be storing many of the applications you run on remote servers (your personal data will probably still be stored on the device)..... but as much as some people would like to believe it, Google's servers aren't bulletproof (they recently had rather long server outages, iirc).
It's somewhat similar to what Asus does with some of their motherboards... basically it lets you boot up very fast into a stripped down OS and most of the applications you'll run will be based online..... The thing is, there are already many available stripped-down Linux version available from Flash memory in many netbooks that offer this "lightweight Cloud OS" experience.... so I have no idea why they're calling it revolutionary 😐 .... maybe there's something I haven't read about yet, or maybe it'll morph to something more extensive deeper into it's development, or maybe it's the usual "lets overestimate them cos they're Google" syndrome going around again.
In the meantime, you could read up on the upcoming gOS Cloud 1.0 (not related to Google, or so they say) or check out gOS Gadgets for a possible preview of what Chrome OS might turn out to be.

Ohhh, ok.
Thanks Gan.
It seems like an idea a bit ahead of its time, tho...
