I was wondering how many readers have paid attention to Kubo's poetry in the beginning of the volumes. Is it just me or does Kubo write some pretty good verses in the volumes? It's amazing to see how much effort he puts into writing them.

I wrote about his poetic habits at: http://www.mangatherapy.com/post/17374107842/poetry-of-bleach-manga.

Has some of his poems moved you?

Are you kidding? They read like something from a high school literary mag. There's very little substance below the surface, no actual play with the language or sound... even accounting for bad translating (and I can read them in Japanese, so this is really a non-issue from my perspective) they're trainwrecks that could only possibly be used as epigraphs for an action manga, which is why he gets away with it. Manga can be perfectly literary if an author is talented in that respect. Tite Kubo is not, even if he is a decent enough storyteller to enthrall the youth of the world.

You want poetry in manga? Look at the lyrics in Solanin, or some of the sparse dialogue in any Igarashi Daisuke piece, especially Majo. And those are only examples.

Ah. Thank you.

No. no. I'm only thanking Crenshinibon for saving me the trouble of typing that out myself. Now my time can be more appropriately spent giggling madly in the corner, laughing flippantly that this topic was ever created.

And then I can laugh at Kubo Tite himself. Nice sunglasses. Dork.

But of course, poetry is something that's 100% subjective. Just like the finest sound system in the world will sound like garbage to some people, poetic words -even hackish amateur attempts- can be contrived as art.

So, enjoy Kubo Tite's words. I bet he wears those sunglasses at night too. That's art, man.

[edit]
I just noticed his author page lists his zodiac as cancer. This is false information. 'Cancer' should be listed under "I hope he has".

And with that, this troll post has breached the boundary of good taste.

That's silly.

It's not a question of 'where' I was touched, rather 'what' I was touched with. And by the rules, such language isn't allowed here.

But I remember it being slimy. And small.

Tthe whole problem with Kubo is that he's way too focused on his characters, like he's trying to make them all poets so readers can relate to them more.

Ahhh, Solanin. I remember reading that. One of the best manga I've ever read.

I agree, to a degree. He's not a brilliant poet, for sure, but at least he tries. People just bring it up if Bleach if one of the 4 manga they read (you know the other 3).

And... Legend of Drizzt. (:

Naruto, One Piece, Fairy Tail... But the point isn't that they read exactly four. It's that they're not too well-versed in manga.

So, trying now equates to succeeding?

My bad. I forgot that most five year olds can draw at Van Gogh level whenever they feel like trying.

If it's not working, you cut it. This doesn't work. He gets away with it because it doesn't affect day to day sales numbers. I guarantee you that if someone tried to start out pulling this nonsense, the editors would laugh them out of the building.

I never said he was succeeding in his attempts at poetry. I'm just saying at least he knows what poetry is, even if he's not really contributing to any decent collections.

It's not terrible... it's just boring, anticlimactic, and trying too hard to sound cool.
