This is sort of related to the length of a manga series. Our member jacob66 was interested in your opinion in manga fillers. With manga, filler would be chapters that don't contribute to the main plot line (or even side plot lines), of course assuming the series even has a main plot line. It could be a couple of chapters of fan service. Or it could be an entire multi-chapter arc that's basically self-contained and never referenced to again.

I went with "only if it's short," but I have another caveat: provided its only purpose isn't fanservice. So all those beach episodes and cosplay episodes and what-have-you are straight out, but there are some ridiculous/whacky ones that I've liked, and the ones showing the characters relaxing and bonding a bit just before or right after a long and strenuous arc can be quite cute/heartwarming if done well. Especially for longer manga, I think the random filler chapter or two here and there is actually necessary to maintain a more natural flow.

Hard to answer this one. To me it makes much more of a difference how often there are filer chapters in a series than how long those are.

Unacceptable and that goes for every medium. Take a break or tell your story, end of story.
Filler in cape comics suck too but other talent is usually brought in to do these parts.
Meaning that it´s easier to spot the bullshit issue(s).

It depends. It is fine as long as it doesn't clash with the flow of the story.

So no interruptions in a chase to suddenly have a hot spring filler and afterwards continue were you left off, BUT it would be totally fine (if silly) to come across a bathhouse and both parties decide to take a rest in it before continueing.

I chose "don't care either way" because to me, the only unacceptable filler is non-canon anime filler episodes. If it didn't happen in the manga, then it's not canon and has no business being in an anime adaptation.

EDIT: Chapters 98-99 of Boku no Hero Academia is a good example of a short, sweet and to the point manga filler mini-arc, for those of you who like it that way.

Generally I'll read all manga filler because you never can tell when it will advance the plot. And I generally love ecchi, especially the beach scene. First, because almost every man would, if it's well drawn and not hopelessly stupid in terms of the characters' behavior. And, second, because I have a lil theory that the beach and the sea in Japanese stories tend to represent THE most available place of at least temporary escape from the pressure of a very demanding society.

Notice that almost all characters on the way to the beach routinely yell "It's the sea!" when they first see it. It's almost a ritual.

This one is hard. In anime you can tell them appart at a quick glance, but in manga you never know if they are actually fillers, side stories, a way to fill plot holes, building up, simply some character development with some ecchi in it, comic relief, etc. And what if that manga filler is better than the stale main story line? Or it lets you see your favourite characters in new situations, the ones who get very little the spotlight? ... Well, I'm a read it all type...

Between arcs - yes

In the middle of one - what the hell

I wouldn't like to see filler in a manga with a highly structured plot, like Akira or Monster. I've never seen filler in a manga of that genre though.

I don't think that manga chapters can be considered filler. To me, "filler" only occurs in anime when it gets ahead of the manga. Manga chapters may stray from the main plot, be uninteresting, feature side characters at the expense of the mains, and other diversions, but it's all part of the story. How would you even know what to skip? Maybe I've just never encountered any.

Huh.......this one, like the earlier one, seems to bring us back to "yeah, if super-long or generous amounts of padding/filler aren't your cup of tea, quit reading shounen" 😀

Yeah, of course, unacceptable, that's either weak story telling or just blatant pandering/padding on the author or pubisher's part to keep the gravy train rolling just a little longer.

But to each their own 🙂

Frankly speaking I read them, but don't hardly ever appreciate them. So, I choose Only if it's short.

I agree. I can't take it if a series has filler chapters often, but a few here and there are okay.
