What ticks me off is groups that hold back releases to get more donations/posts/whatnot. Yes, I've only come across one that does that, but that's enough to set me off.
Whoa, they actually do that?

Unless the word "pending" has more than one meaning, yeah. But their scanlations are good, so I won't reveal them and cuss too much.

"yeah that's my favorite character too! I love it when he steals verb from other posts, it's so cool! ^_^"
I have made comments like these, to my profound sadness. It makes me feel a little cheap, a little dirty, i hate it, but the good side is that after making a complete ass out of myself in other forums i feel much more comfortable posting here and other places where i actually WANT to post.
Sorry for being incoherent

Pretty much all the sites that do this that i've experienced is for shoujo manga, and the groups usually don't have an IRC channel. I think one of the reasons for doing the posts thing is to get comments from us, and get us talking... As much as i would want to - i almost always haven't read the series yet (i'm just a leeching till it's done and feel in the mood for reading), i don't have the time or patience to join a forum, posts the required amount, find the password, and repeat for another group. I find the process a bit tedious and puts me off, usually waiting till it appears elsewhere.
I purely HATE when groups only offer releases through their forum, and then require "20 quality posts" (or whatever) before they'll allow you to download the release. Mostly I just say "screw it, not worth my time" and check #lurk periodically; in fact I can't remember the last time I joined a forum to get a release.

Rofl I end up at lurk all the time also as a result, or I end up waiting till there are DDL's and generally by that time, I've forgotten all about it. >.>

To tell the truth, I've actually lost some of my respect for those groups. Most of them release some truly fantastic scanlations, but their method of distributing releases rubs me the wrong way. Though I realize that scanlating may be a thankless job, I also feel that true appreciation (in this case, 25 non-spam posts) isn't something you can force out of a person.

Sometimes pending means that it WAS upcoming then staff issues popped up. So, they decided to place it in pending instead of back in future. That happened in a group I helped translate stuff.

If the guys from scanlation groups don't have enough visits and/or number of logged people on their site, they may have troubles with paying for the bandwith, cause most of their founds come from pop-ups and stuff like that.
Forcing people who want to dl their releases to make 20 posts is annoying. But think about all those mods, pissed because of tons of worthless posts they need to take care of... 🤣
Well, I'm reading just too many manga to go on x forums and post there as much as they want.

And I was wondering before, where did I see your name. Now I remember 🙂

You've seen my name before? (and it wasn't on this forum? Where? &I found out.&) You can't do this to a person. I hate when this happens 'cause it's like the other person knows a secret I don't.
I agree, those poor mods. Why do they even bother becoming mods?
That's why those people should get free forums or website, or have multiple forums, instead of spending money on a hobby and in turn aggravating all those leechers. 🤣

bump, just because i'm pissed at how many of these stupid rules i encountered today while checking the release page.
I tried once to comply to this rule, and since i didn't wanted to wait to read a manga, i did the 35 (THIRTY FIVE) posts within a little less than half hour. To me they were quality posts, but apparently, the moderator didn't agreed and banned me. They don't seem to like to discuss the utility of their rule and the impact it have on the success of the manga they scanlate. They don't like success, that's the only option i see. Or they are attention whores... What struck me is that despite this rule, their board usually have less posts than there is hairs on kojack's head.
Last find was the scanlation group "alice dreams", (15 posts to download)
around 300 people are able to download their stuff; counting their staff. That's awfully low when you see the hits the usual groups are making, but at least they just ask for a delay for other hosting website to host their work.
An exemple of an overly abusive post nazi: shoujoshare:
They want 35 posts to be able to download their stuff. But be careful, your posts must be longer than 10 words, or at least 2 paragraphs (apparently you'll have to make 11 words with 2 paragraphs to enter the category of non spammers), else you'll have a warning the first week, the second week all your posts will be erased, and the third week you'll be banned for 3 months (yeah, these rules are completely illogic, judge for yourself: http://shoujoshare.net/forum/index.php?topic=199.0 )
Sadly i can't find the member list, but surfing their board proves very enlightening, as how much people post meaningless things to rise their post count, like "oh, i very much liked this manga, it was fantastic" (10 words, no spam ?), or better, the useless escape route, with the "what are you listening now" section, where people post what they are listening to. An easy way to show how much you respect their work by posting how much britney spears crap you have indulged yourself today. if you manage to survive 35 britney titles, you can download their stuff.
If these so called translation group don't want to make their work available to the public, why to they bother updating their release here ? (that's true for any group asking for attention and "respect for their work". While i totally respect groups that ask for a delay to host their work elsewhere, i'll gladly piss on the group that ask for a number of post to download their stuff:
dudes/gals, you'll gain no respect by forcing people to give you attention by asking them to give a little life to your board. Take a look at really successful groups and see for yourself that with quality comes sucess and forum frequentation. You won't obtain both if you don't make your work known by freely spreading it.
(yeah, long post because i'm really pissed)
What i like about sarcasms is when people don't get it they think you are nice.
A long bump that was.
Well, it sort of sucks when they ask those,
but I guess they just want to have a growing community.

i edited the part about alice dream tho, while they ask for 15 posts to download their stuff, they have at least a community of people that can upload their work elsewhere.
The thing is, it's completely artificial, the way they want to make a community. The only other exemple of community of people forced to be together for something that comes in mind is a prison "you'll stay here for 15 posts!".
Basically, you can't make a community by forcing people to do something. they have to come by themselves, i bet 90% of the people that stayed for the required number of posts stopped posting right after reaching that number.

You are right.. for example i stopped after reaching X posts.. i was quite boring
On the other hand, there wouldn't be a community if they didn't do it...

even with X posts there is still no community
