😕 HOW WOULD READING MANGA BE EMBARRASSING? What's to hide? Everyone comes to me because I'm the go to guy for manga. 😛 I DO NOT hide the fact I read manga. It's not something serious, like being gay or something, and if a person has a problem with what I READ they're not much of a friend.
wow... way to be a douche about it. some people aren't in the same position as you. they could be a little shy about it or might be embarrassed by it because they don't want to be ridiculed by certain people.
There's nothing douchebagish about his comment. Fact is revealing you read manga is not nearly as big as coming out of the closet. Chances are if you reveal you read manga, your friends might bust your chops, you're "friends" might stop being friends, but that's because they were never real friends. And yea, a shy person may be hurt by that, but even they'll get over that pretty quickly. On the other hand, if someone comes out of the closet, even friends that would taken a bullet for them could still stop being their friend. That's how big that revelation is. The grandness of that revelation can not even compare to revealing you read manga.

agree.
not to purposely offend anyone but i actually feel more embarrassed about the title of this thread than about exposing my manga collection to my friends...to me, manga is just another type of literature that also imbues the qualities of eloquence and meaningfulness similar to any other novel or play...there are many bad and shallow manga series just like there are many crude and tasteless novels - common sense dictates that you have to look for the gem in the rough in order to have an enjoyable literary experience....i learn as many things about life through manga as i've learned through books; therefore, i see no reason to be ashamed of the fact that i read manga.
it'll be awesome if my friends gain interests in manga as a result of my exposure...i'm not going to stop reading or denounce our friendships if they disapprove of manga, though...i don't believe in radical overreactions over something as simple as a friend's disapproval...

If the topic comes up, then I'll join in the conversation, if not then it doesn't really matter then. And I have the type of friends that make jokes pretty much in all conversations and talk trash to each other jokingly of course.

@ Sandman1008: I agree that in today's society there's generally a big difference between sharing your manga hobby and comparing that with the act of coming out of the closet with your sexual identity but I don't think we should accept that notion or support the idea that it's a big deal. In fact, and if anything should be judged, it should rather be your choice in hobbies than the sexual identity that you were born with. Nobody's dealt the same set of cards in life when they're born, but I feel it's the choices we make with them that should define our worth as a person.
That aside, I generally agree with the points stated above; I'm not embarrassed about my manga hobby. It might not be as mainstream as tv, or novels, but to me it's just another form of visual media. If people don't like it or feel they can't be friends with me on account of my hobby then they're not people I would want to hang out with in the first place.

manga and animes and hentais and yaois/shounen ai for girls for that matter is just that, another interest.
if your friend can't see you for what you are and choose society's standard over you,
you are better off looking for new friends.
might be a good idea to have some manga/animes that is for noob in your mind, in case
your friends want some recommendation.

I don't let anyone know about my manga-reading and anime-watching habits. But it's not because I'm embarrassed, it's just that this is one of my highly personal preferences and I like to keep it to myself. If there's any manga / anime I want to discuss, I just do it online.
I have better things to talk about with people in real life!

over here manga is a very common thing... so why would i be embarrassed reading manga 😕 i usually read manga as soon as i got it.. public transportation, food court/restaurant, anywhere.. so does any other book reader over here
im guessing u live in japan?
nope... just because manga here is common doesn't meant i'm living in japan... it's only meant that i live in a country where manga is common 😀
ps: over here i'll not gonna suggest to bring manga to school (university campus is ok)... just like u see at most manga/anime, there's a probability that it'll get confiscated. no good see T__T... u must went to the vice principle's office after school only to get it back..

somewhere in Asia, I bet.
I had the same experience, when I was in high school many of my friend read manga, even though they aren't manga fans or anything, and the girls were reading shoujos on daily basis, at that time I thought maybe novels are going to die soon 🤣

Till a year ago, I had never heard of manga or anime. Than I met my emo (now not emo both something else) friend rayna, and I met Nadine (who can draw really good manga xd) and I kind of began watching anime..AND I LOVE IT! so..I read manga too nowadays, I'm not in the same class as those two, but in my new class Nicole, reads too xd, nobody asks me If I read it but I would say yes. ^_^ thanks to those two I'm addicted xd I'm really not ashamed.
