The Cinema Today website reports that MADHOUSE is the acclaimed anime studio (Death Note, Paprika, Vampire Hunter D, Summer Wars) that is producing the previously announced Supernatural the Animation project for Warner Brothers. According to the website, this is the world's first animated project from a Japanese anime studio that is based on a popular overseas drama series. Shigeyuki Miya (Lupin III: Green vs Red, Aoi Bungaku Series, Buzzer Beater) and Atsuko Ishizuka (Aoi Bungaku Series) are co-directing the project.

The animeanime.jp website reports that the anime will be a 22-episode season that will cover the storyline of the live-action version's first two seasons. The first volume will ship on January 12 with the first two episodes. On February 2, the "Box 1" set will ship with episodes 3 to 12. On April 6, the "Box 2" set will ship with episodes 13 to 22. (There will be a different release schedule for the rental version of the project.)

The anime project will not only remake the best episodes from the live-action version, but also depict original episodes not seen in the live-action version. Those original episodes will include prologues of the Winchester brothers' childhood, anime-only enemies, and episodes featuring secondary characters from the live-action version.

Supernatural creator Eric Kripke is credited as the anime project's creator, and MADHOUSE co-founder Masao Maruyama is serving as executive producer. Naoya Takayama (Night Head, Liar Game) is supervising the series' scripts, and Takahiro Yoshimatsu (Trigun) is designing the characters.

Update 2: Yuya Uchida (Soul Eater's Dr. Franken Stein, Naruto Shippūden's Rinji) will dub the role of Sam, while Hiroki Touchi (Trinity Blood's Abel Nightroad, Bokurano's Kokkpelli) will dub the role of Dean. Oh my gosh, I'm so excited - and not just because this AWESOME show will get animated, but because this sets an amazing precedent for other shows to follow. What other TV shows or movies (from America/UK) would you like to see anime-ized?

I vote for the Matrix series and, and... Torchwood! Yeah. OH, TORCHWOOD. Not that it's ever gonna happen, but... <3

I bet a lot of "True Blood" fans are gonna want to see that in an anime version, but... My (very humble) personal opinion is that there are plenty of vamp animes out there already. That, and I don't like "True Blood" at all (sorry! But you're welcome to like it and vote for it, of course!).

The "Harry Potter" series would probably do incredibly well as an anime; there's lots of potential there for a nice shounen/shoujo series. Hmm... And this is seriously geeky, and practically impossible, but HBO's "Rome" would make a STUNNING historical seinen anime. Like. Just amazing. 😲 And maybe a new "Sherlock Holmes" anime series! AND WHAT ABOUT STAR TREK? With the new movie and everything, maybe there will be a resurgence of Trekkie-ness across the globe, including in Japan? MAKE IT SO! /Picard

I'm just thrilled to bits, imagining all sorts of English TV shows and movies that might get "animelated" (lol, reverse-scanlated into anime?). OH MY GOD, WOW. And my inner fujoshi is cheering at the prospect of animated subtextual Wincest, but... I'll leave that aside for now. 🤣

I heard about this, and I'm SOOOO jazzed! I can't count the number of times I've rewatched the first two seasons (the rest aren't as good), so I'm glad they're sticking to just those two; season three wouldn't have been bad to do as well, but anything after season 3 just plain ol' disappoints me (Aside from a few certain episodes.

It was funny; I was first told about this by my brother, and he was all like, "It's as if someone in Japan is making something tailor made to your Obsessions!' XD

As for other shows... I would LOVE to see Dr. Who as an anime. And Merlin.... although those are both British shows, not American. Oh well.

This is one of my favorite shows out and considering that this upcomming season seems to be its last I hope the anime can compare. 😀

Hmm... 50-50? At first I disapprove because I had bad experiences with 'adaptations' (anime -> real live movie/drama, manga -> anime, drama -> manga etc). Some things are supposed to be left as it is... you know? But then again, Supernatural seems to have the right plot/atmosphere to be an anime so hmmmm...

Oh well, I'll just be excited for now ^_~ b

I love True Blood but I think it should stay in its novel and tv series form too 🙂
