I'd like to throw an idea of mine out here so somebody can tell me everything that's wrong with it.

I think part of this problem (with mangahere, as well as some other things) is the nature and inherent infrastructure of the scanlating scene. There are quite a lot of scanlating groups (the list to the right shows over 700 active groups, and way more inactive) and the majority of them are quite small. Almost all are always looking for some position or another. Any one group has practically no power to do anything.

The idea I'd like to suggest is a union of sorts. A network between groups, on a wider scale. A monthly update that announces which groups are picking up which series. Easier coordinated joint projects. Possibly, mergers between groups, so there aren't so many empty IRC channels, and projects don't die so fast.

This would also make any sort of protest against manga-hosting sites possible. I know that the idea to withhold releases for a while has been tried and failed before, however, before one can even attempt to protest like this, a noticeable amount of groups have to be organized and on-board. The average mangahere reader won't notice a delayed release of a specific series, but if even half of the series with regular releases that he/she reads are clearly late, he might wonder a bit. Maybe research a bit on how those releases are magically dropped into his lap.

Any sort of organized anything is pretty much impossible right now, but if a good amount of groups got together and started talking to each other, a lot of things could all of the sudden become possible.

This isn't a new idea. It didn't work in the past and it won't work in the future. You spend enough time in scanlation, you'll understand that most scanlators simply don't care much about anything.

Well, it doesn't have to be quite that big at first. Joint projects happen, all this has to be at first is a larger, more networked source for cooperation and communication.

Just FYI, probably most joint project end in breakup and mutual recriminations. Majority of group leaders I know would never agree to a joint project. And you're proposing something even more advanced.

Perhaps it can only happen if its like become somekind of corporation, meaning its not just their hobby/anything else but their work.
Its just like trying to mix alot of people and not just group, under one ideal/better community.
Very hard and very unlikely but still there are the possibility.
The main problem is, who is strong/capable enough to be the leader or at least to be the source of motivation to aim and move towards that goal?

Edit : I think mangaupdates are technically like that.
Isn't all those group, active or not, are joined into one, in the database of this site? Now, I wonder whats the next step needed.... (the disappearance of the group link is one of the backstep)
