To the best of my knowledge:
A lot of yuri targets guys, but certainly not all of it.
Pretty much all yaoi targets women.

Well it's kind of like girls reading shounen. By definition it's aimed at young males, but that doesn't mean people outside of the demographic won't read it on ocassion

The targer demographic or yaoi is females, yuri's target demographic is males.
Then you have bara and, which is targeted at homosexual males,
h-shota which is targeted at hetero males.
Why does it matter though?
Just read whatever you find interesting.
Hrodulf and Bjornolfr, you will not be forgotten.

I know that bara is made by gay men for gay men. Is there anything similar in yuri, like a specific sub-genre of yuri made by lesbians for lesbians?

Some people use the word "bian" for works along those lines, though it's a loose category. I've seen Takeuchi Sachiko's Honey & Honey categorized as "bian" when it's meant for general audiences; same for Yamaji Ebine's yuri works.
The only works that are definitely made for queer women are the ones from queer women's magazines like Anise and Phryne.
