Tokyo, Japan is the safest city in the world
According to a recent report by the Economist, the capital of Japan ranks the highest in terms of digital security, and scores high in terms of health, infrastructure, and personal safety - this despite it being the most populated city in the world.
The report looked at cities considered to be major urban centers, and ranked 50 cities around the world based on the categories mentioned above. South-East Asia's Singapore ranked second, with Osaka, Japan and Stockholm, Sweden taking the third and fourth spots respectively.

I am not surprised but this puts things in perspective doesn´t it.

I'm gonna call bs on that report considering they underreport a lot of their crimes especially sex related crimes. Not to mention the amount of suspicious deaths reported as suicide. It might be relatively safe as far as cities go but "safest" is especially laughable considering the police still let the Yakuza operate with seemingly no intentions of stopping them.
And as far as Osaka goes. This article leads me to take that city being on the list with a grain of salt too.
Also this report was done by The Economist Intelligence Unit. I'm curious as to where they got all their information from. Looking through the report all I can really find is this passage.
"The analysis of the Index results, conducted by the EIU, was supplemented with wide-ranging research and in-depth interviews with experts in the field."
Does this mean they merely took "experts" words on it and where did they get the data they used?
Also this part was especially striking. "Sponsored by NEC"
I was curious as to who NEC was as tbh as I had never heard of them. Wikipedia provided me with some interesting info on them. "NEC Corporation is a Japanese multinational provider of information technology (IT) services and products, with its headquarters in Minato, Tokyo, Japan."
Well color me surprised a report sponsored by a Japanese corporation headquartered in Tokyo has found that Tokyo is the safest city in the world. Not to mention digital security is the highest. I guess that must be because NEC is protecting the fair citizens of Tokyo. 😲
I'm not sure I can in good conscience take this report seriously at all. Seems like bollocks if you ask me. Especially taking into consideration it was sponsored by a business that would have something to gain by making Tokyo look good.
I don't claim to be any kind of expert in these sorts of things but to me this report seems fishy at best.

Oh look, a report by a Japanese company saying that a city in Japan is the safest. Not to mention another one amongst the top 5.
Sure got me convinced.

Can´t say i am an expert or care that much but the list looks fine to me.
Japan always ranks hight on these kind of things. Or on suicide charts 🤨 .
NY is the one that surprises me. That city was crazy dangerous 30 years ago.
- Tokyo, Japan
- Singapore
- Osaka, Japan
- Stockholm, Sweden
- Amsterdam, Holland
- Sydney, Australia
- Zurich, Switzerland
- Toronto, Canada
- Melbourne, Australia
- New York, USA

Security: Tokyo is one of the safest cities in the world; even petty crime is unusual.
One exception: women on crowded subways are sometimes victims of chikan (gropers); look for ladies-only subway cars at rush hour.

lol since when is New York and Stockholm "safe cities". NY has never been safe and Stockholm was maybe safe 20 years ago, but not any longer.
This report is probably as reasonable as unicorns showing up at my work place.

I hear that even if they try to report sex crimes the police don't really think much of it in Japan and it is really not prioritized and may even get ignored.

I have to agree on this. Stockholm has grown more and more restless over the years for a looong time now and if that city scores the 4th place in the ranking for the safest cities, there is something terribly wrong with the way this is being measured.
Let me guess. Stockholm has a homeless problem? Welcome to europe i say.
I lived in St.Petersburg in my youth an the mafia took over an entire apartment complex after we moved away so you all be glad with what you got. It could be Cape Town, South Africa: http://zeenews.india.com/slideshow/worlds-most-dangerous-cities-top-10_49.html Or HBO´s The Corner/Wire. Detroit even build a Robocop statue!
Or real Silent Hill: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Centralia,_Pennsylvania

No hun, that's not the only issue Stockholm has. I could make a whole list, but I prefer not to. However, I want you to imagine Stockholm as a beautiful delicious looking banana. Imagine that this banana is very yummy looking, has many nutrients and is generally good for your health. You've fantasized about this banana for so long but when you decide to finally open it, it's rotten.
That's Stockholm. It's a rotten banana.
I personally think that India along side Brazil ( why hasn't anyone mentioned that country yet?) is one of the most dangerous countries.
India (the rape charts) + Brazil are "good" choices. Burma and the entirety of Ukraine can mentioned but come on real Silent Hill is no place to be.
Stockholm sounds like my Bonn. I could tell you tall tales.
If anyone has a related documentary or something for me i would watch/read it. The older ones about North Korea on youtube are amazing http://youtube.com/watch?v=OtuFaEy4jzE

Tokyo Ranked The World's Most Livable City
http://animenewsnetwork.com/interest/2015-06-15/tokyo-ranked-the-world-most-livable-city/.89297
Another one of these articles hm? Well i am still not moving but this part doesn´t surprise me either:
Another annual survey, the World Happiness Report published by the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network, adds another angle. While Tokyo and Fukuoka rank high in the "livable" city survey, the people of Japan as a whole ranks #46 in overall happiness. That survey found Switzerland to be the "happiest" place to live. Factors for that survey include real GDP per capita, the life expectancy for a healthy citizen, personal connections, perceived freedom to make life choices, freedom from corruption, and generosity.

My friends who've studied abroad in Tokyo say the same, though Tokyo is one expensive place to live.

safe for whom
the millions of prostitutes that get bought and sold by the yakuza more or less in the open every year that come from all the shitpoor asian countries and former soviet states?
tokyo is like the spider in the web with human trafficking in asia and into europe
not just prostitution also other forms of slave labour/"workers"
the prostitution problem in tokyo is probably not something they take into consideration when they make lists like that
and i would assume around 1 000 000 woman work as prostitutes in tokyo
rpobably alot more
are they safe? what will happen when they turn 25 and start to get wrinkles?
are there some sort of union or social wellfare or anything for "old"/sick prostitutes
same with actual organized crime that are allowed to flourish in tokyo
my guess is that since the police are ok with it
everyone is ok with it
so why mention it in reports like that
sure if ur just a dumb tourist who like to look at big flashy signs in the richer part of tokyo
you will never run into any problems
but that is usualy the case in evey city in the world
not many criminals or organizations are dumb enough to make problems with tourists
since then the police have to care
and then their will be problem
