i usually do anime first, but if i hear the manga is better then the anime, then i might do that first or just choose which i wanna do first by preference

I find reading the manga to be the best of both worlds (words + a visual), so I start with that if it's available. It's also easier to get through it at my own pace.

But if the original was a novel, I'd go with manga / anime first since I don't have much time to spare for enjoying them.

Whichever was the original, but maybe not if it's a LN or WN. I have limited patience for the overly descriptive language and poor grammar and prose (made infinitely worse by MTL's) which plagues that particular medium, so I tend to opt for their manga/anime adaptations, provided they have a reasonably faithful retelling.

Usually it's manga/manhwa or anime for me.

In many case, I'm usually not a LN reader (I haven't found a LN/WN with a good quality translation). My kind of original source mostly is limited to manga/manhwa or anime (since it's the easiest one I could access with better quality). Solo Leveling is about to be adapted to anime, but I have only read the manhwa, not the novel itself.. Lookism has already released on Netflix, but I haven't watched it since I haven't read the manhwa.

On the other hand, I decided to watch Persona anime first, since I couldn't afford to buy the console and the game. Same as Kingdom Hearts, which I decided to read the manga since I've never actually played the game. 😅

Lol. Poor grammar and prose by MTLs is definitely one of the reason why I can't stand LN or WN. I only read a little bit of them, if they're good and I enjoy the story. Most of the times I just can't stand knowing the translation obviously does not edited/proofread at all. 😅

I go for whichever is the original in general, but I'd go with anime first over manga because they seem to be pretty faithful (but I haven't watched that many) and I like to hear the voice actors and the language.

However, and this is more specific to traditional books and movie adaptations, but my rule is that if there is a movie version, I always watch the film before reading the novel it was based on. Books tend to be more rich and more detailed than the movie, so if you go and read the book first, you'll inevitably end up not enjoying the movie because you'll be so busy comparing it, pointing out faulty adaptations, missing elements, etc. The only exceptions I can think of is "Carrie" and "The Shining"... those two films are infinitely better than their source novel.

Usually a few chapters of the manga, since I can get through that the fastest. Get the gist of it and then check out the original or other adaptations if I feel it is something worth continuing to consume.

That being said, whenever I get the time, I'm going to read all routes of Fate/Stay Night in manga form and have that be the exclusive way I interact with the events of the first game, because I think that will make the most Fate fans the maddest

I'm not a fan of watching anime due to it usually taking longer than reading the manga. The light novel... the translations and website format usually make it hard, to be honest. For example, after watching the entire anime, I only got half-way through the LN of Chrome Shelled Regios because where it was translated made reading it a chore. I had an easier time with Solo Leveling.

Another issue is that often the light novel is objectively worse due to the author not knowing how/when to end the story.

An example of this is "I Got Caught Up In a Hero Summon, But the Other World was At Peace". I can understand why the MC would get with 3 of the girls: the one who has been looking for someone like him for thousands of years, the one who decided to become a better caretaker of her world because she saw him in the future, and the one who literally ends up killing people who don't have the MC's ability by mistake.

Those three have no other options, or so the story implies. But after the important part of the plot ends, the light novel story continues with the MC continuing to enlarge his harem and... I just don't see how that's in-character.

If I realize there is more than one version of a series I'll usually watch the anime and then read the manga or light novel. Generally the manga or LN has more depth to it than the anime so it's easy to enjoy even after watching the anime since there is more to experience. It can be a bit disappointing when an anime matches a manga or I find out the manga came afterwards and just copies the anime nearly exactly. Though most times I watch/read whichever version I find first.

Makes me glad that so few responded with "the anime".

Manga.

They're they are easier to read and usually give a general idea of the story. Animes usually add many fillers and leave nothing to imagination, it'd been some years since I'd last watched an anime adaptation until I recently watched chainsawman and binged some scenes of mushoku tensei and I was a bit disappointed. There are usually many discrepancies between each format, but so far most manga adaptations I've read keep things shorter and dynamic (they usually don't put both inner monologues and conversations and try to condense slower paced arks).

But I must say LN adaptations (and most other adaptations) are usually made to hype and get more sales on other merchandising. They usually take out some inconsistencies and add some elements to rope in the fans of the original and give some new tropes to please new readers that consume that format. LN still have fillers and since they must keep the volumes short, so they usually butcher short/long arks for them to fit.

Lastly if the original creator didn't plan out a proper story line in the original, when fixing those flaws you might completely change the main characters (This usually happens to adaptations of webtoons/novels the author might be good an captivating readers with nice imagery and the right bits of comed/tension/drama, but they might be making amateur mistares drawing or big inconsistencies ...).
