No it is not a side story, i repeat not a side story.

What u see is the past, around 100 years back in time, during those chapters u will find out who the Vizards where and how they became what theya re and u aslo find out about Urahara Kisuke.

The meaning is that u are supposed to get a beter understanding about the thing that are happening in the Bleach storyline.

and about the -108 -107 ... and so on is proboly to symbolise that it is the past and is getting closer to the pressent.

The only way i can explain it, is that 108 is a sacred number in buddhism. So maybe it's something symbolical.
