I think most stereotypes are hard to get rid of once they've been embedded in your head. I'd like to believe I won't judge a person by how they look or what race they're from, but I know I do. I wish I wouldn't but I do. So what does anyone else think?

I agree with you somewhat. All stereotypes are based on truths, but you have to remember that not everyone from a specific group acts like the stereotype that they're sadly associated with. It's better to let those people prove the stereotype wrong (Or right, if they're stupid), before you open your mouth or do some kind of action and have people think that you're a bigot.

Lol, I never think about stereotypes. They're old and lame.

Yeah, of course most people don't act like the stereotype they're labeled as. Once I get to know them I laugh at that very first impression I got. But, I mean it's hard not to judge a person at all and I mean just judge and not act on that judgment. Subconsciously, I feel that it's impossible not to.

Well, you're human. You can't help it, it's all a part of human nature.

I'm a deity myself though. So I have never done anything of the sort. 😎

Stereotypes are good, useful, and necessary. You can't take the time to judge everything as what they really are, so having rules of thumb to quickly classify things that you're not going to interact deeply with is necessary - so long as your stereotypes are based somewhere in fact (and they mostly are - there are good reasons that stereotypes arise).

The whole 'stereotypes are bad' thing is nonsense, so long as you have enough of a brain to differentiate between the stereotype and reality. Being a dick to people because of the stereotype you have about them is a stupid idea, but being able to go 'an old lady - old ladies are dottery and no threat and so it would be safe to ask her for help here, rather than asking the dodgy looking street thugs over there' or whatever is plainly useful. In reality, of course, maybe she's some crazed gun-toting old lady and nothing like the stereotype, or the thug-looking guys are the nicest guys around ... but chances are your stereotyping here is helpful.

And, of course, if you actually get to know someone then the stereotype becomes irrelevant - so who cares? It only comes up with people that you're dealing with casually, so it doesn't matter all that much anyway.

I think it's mean to judge someone but stereotypes do cross my mind, I can't help it. They have some truth in them but they aren't 100% true.

Ex: Mexicans can swim, jump fences, run fast, and most work in the fields. o.O
I am 100% Mexican and I can barely swim, I suck at jumping fences (havn't made much of an adempt though), I can run a lil faster than girls but definatly not guys, and I do not work in the fields, if I did then I'd probably poison the crops for the hell of it. o.e

Hate them stereotypes but what can you do? :/

I think its funny when none of the stereotypes are true. My asian friend can't play ping pong or ddr. Has poofy curly hair. Extremely tall. Ect. We always joke about it.

Of course you're going to make stereotypes. People will argue they don't blah blah blah, but you do. And it's not a bad thing. As long as you don't act on your judgements or really hate someone based on stereotypes then its fine. If you don't act out no one gets hurt.

Agree. I think it's fine if you joke about it but not to the point when your being a d*ck about it. D: You can say that you don't put people into these categories but I doubt that stereotypes don't cross someones mind every once and awhile.. :X

🤣 Same here...but...I can swim and as kid I loved to climb trees and fences...so much for breaking stereotypes 🙄

To me stereotypes can be both good and bad but I don't think they'll be dying out soon.

Sadly, stereotypes exist because they have proven themselves true in the vast majority of cases. I'm not saying that they're true in every case—in fact, a lot of them stem from misconceptions. They do prove valuable to people in every day interactions. People call upon stereotypes without even knowing it.

Stereotypes get bad when they are applied to others in a cruel, incorrect, or discriminatory way.

They're also splashed generously over the storylines of every movie and book and manga and anime and manhwa...

This may sound crazy, but maybe that's where we get it from? When I was little, there were a lot of shows with very stereotypical characters of other races. Also, we may have been unconsciously watching our parents, who may or may not have done the same to theirs.
On a related note, I'm Jewish, and I still don't see all that money I'm supposed to have hidden in a secret cave under the sea. 😀

The Jewish people having money stereotype dates way back to BC times when Jews typically weren't allowed to hold jobs in most European countries. Since they couldn't get 'real' jobs their only option was to become money lenders. They got good at it. -shrugs-

I got a source to back up my hefty claim, but I learnt this in school when studying Shakespeares "The Merchant of Venice"

They never die at all.

They merely take on new forms.
