The ones I hate the most:

Quote from loosecannon504

  1. No matter how much damage a character's body takes, after they recover you won't see any scars. And the only time they get a scar, it becomes a plot device for later on (i.e. The whole throbbing pain from the scar when the person who caused it is near)

  2. The more retarded a plan is that the protagonist makes up, the more likely it is to work. In cooperation with this, the antagonist always has a genius plan that fails.

  3. Getting stabbed multiple times only kills you if you are unimportant to the story.

  4. Whenever a character (Good or Evil) starts to transform, the other side won't attack them in the middle of their transformation, but instead just stand there and watch while being shocked.

  5. In the event of a card game, the protagonist alone can spawn from nowhere cards that would be completely useless in any other situation, but are exactly what he needs at that moment.

  6. When a character gains the possession of a giant robot, they immediately know how to control it without a sliver of prior training.

How the main character always seems to win, it gets irritating after a while. The bad guys should win sometimes too. 😮

The bad guys do win from time to time, but only the battles never the war. When the main char/his troops get their asses kicked, you know it's only a matter of chapters before they go through training from hell (or if it's DBZ just surviving is good enough) and come back 1000000000x more powerful.

Worst shounen cliche: When someone charges up his ki/chakra/reiatsu/reiki/whatever and all the onlookers go WHOOAAAAAA, SUCH POWER WE'VE NEVER SEEN SUCH POWER ZOMG ZOMG, and this is repeated in every fight scene for 689 chapters.

  • Crazy hairstyle (I mean where the hell do they use to get that hair).
  • Power charges last for like 10 months and all the evil guys wait ´til he is finished before attacking or they just dont attack and receive the power on the face.

Surprisingly enough I remember one scene in Dragonball (of all places) where Goku tricks a boss into charging up and then hits him during his power up sequence: "You're wide open when you do that!" I think it was against Cell...?

I think maybe they produce this propaganda to encourage Japanese kids to study their brains out. "See, if you work hard like X in the manga, you can be the best in your class, the way that he became the best fighter."

It works though XD

I third.
That, and a few more.

How a main character, without any previous training/experience becomes stronger than a character that's trained for who knows how long.

A main character always, somehow becomes stronger, and stronger... coughDBZcough...~

A main character being something of a "happy go lucky", way too cheerfull and stuff~ With a sad little past...

Yeah... I don't like those~

DBZ technically wasn't cliche.

Since it was one of the first of its kind. 😉

This thread is such a joke 😀 if u take out all of these there is nothing left, we had the thing that everybody hates the happy-go-lucky guy, everybody hates the wimpy guy, everybody hates the serious cool type, everybody hates the playboy, everybody hates the good looking asshole, what do we have left? 60year old grandpa pervert? oh **** we had that one too! The point is that almost all possibilities for shounen have been used in some mangas, some less some more.

But it's nice to express your opinions, maybe it would be time to give some suggestions on what kind of characters there should be in manga

Now, I do agree with some stuff, like the scars, nobody ever has them after fights, also that in shounen the protagonist almost never dies, if he does, he will be resurrected

also there were some complaints about how some characters just get stronger and stuff, first of all, maybe they jsut got more talent than the guy who trains like crazy. Second of all please find me a guy, who wants to read a manga that has 50 chapters of some guy doing muscle training at the gym or something.

After 20 years it has become a cliche.

I'm saying that DBZ in itself wasn't cliche at the time.

The concept is so much overdone now, that it has become cliche. Cliche isn't necessarily bad, it just means that some concept gets used a lot. It's all in the way how you implement it in the story.

... And most fail at it, sadly.
