The obligatory onsen trips. God, kill me now. Why do they always have to go to a hot spring? I see this happen in shoujo manga too. And if there isn't an onsen scene, then there's the bath scene.
This goes hand-in-hand with the indecisive romances of course.

i guess the mangaka can't think of another way for the two characters to accidently walk in almost naked on each other?

Do they have to? T_T

what I hate most is when the main character has some imba power inside of him, but allways holds back in fights because he doesn't want the power to take control over him. (like in bleach, naruto, berserk...)
It seems like most of the long shounen titles come to this point after some time...

In Berserk Guts never had an unimaginable power and he never held back, I don't know where you got that idea. But Naruto yeah.

...yes he does. whats with his new Armour, that transforms into this wolf-like shape if he gets angry... but he allways tries to stay calm because he stays to long in this form he won't come back normal.
well, in vol 26 he gets the armor, i don'T know if you have read that far....

yeah you're right^^ there ALLWAYS is a hot spring scene.
I think its just for fan service.
or perhaps the mangaka are just feed up of allways drawing filth sweaty men beating each other up. So drawing some scenes with nearly naked girls is a welcome change 😀

Standards, standards...
It get quite boring to read/watch those bathing scenes.
Boys go and take a peek, the protagonist falls or flies or does whatever he does and
somehow ends up swimming in the women's bath...

You people can't seriously put Berserk and Naruto in the same sentence. First off Berserk isnt' a Shounen its a Seinen. Also the power of the armor isnt' something that Guts himself is in possession of. The power of the armor is an outside source. When he has to use it he does last time I checked.

I don'T know, the newer berserk volumes are just like any other shounen manga, just more blood and gore...
ok, at the beginning berserk really was seinen, but since the capters he's running around with all this brats I'm not sure any more...

sorry for putting it together with naruto ;-) I just mentioned it there because it matched there. guy gets angry, transform into some stronger form, but cant control himself in this form. after becoming normal again, he's afraid of hurting his allies and doesn't want to use that power again.
its the same for Guts Armor, Ichigos Hollow form or Naruto's demon-chakra-form (you could even count in DBZs giant-ape form too )

Lets see I have several-

Steryo Type girls ONLY! This one bugs me to no end. In ALL the mangas I have read, which is quite a few, the girls are like only, goths, preps, ditsy, stupid, ugly, charming - the list goes on. However, one thing I never find is ANY Girl who is a total tomboy and is interested in the internet and books, or a girl who likes doing her schoolwork and loves sports at the same time.
In Tomboys/Love sports you only find pretty girls who like sports and are Tomboys. Thats all I have seen, that is.
In Internet/book girls, you find they are either horribly ugly, or only slightly cute, and that they always wear glasses and are considered nerds, not to mention they are always horribly shy and blush every five seconds. This one annoys me the most, I think.
** In love schoolwork girls** I haven't even see this, and it annoys me to no end. Are there really no girls that like schoolwork? I only see guys being really nerdy. Not to mention the guys are the smart ones most of the time, which annoys me.
( These are mostly related to minor character girls, although I haven't seen a main character girl being any of these things either. XD)

In main character girls, I only find girls who are kind, sweet, caring, sometimes with a little bit of a temper( Though not much of ones), and they normally always fall in love with the main guy character, or already are in love. This is really funny but VERY, VERY, VERY annoying as well. I mean really.

  • NOTE
These are only based on my experiences, which is normally limited. So, don't flame me, you may calmly argue and list mangas that are otherwise, but please, do not scream. That annoys me to know end, and I normally end up screaming and then getting in trouble. XD

The main character just hooking up with a chick in the end, espacially when it's the obvious chick and we all saw it coming, it's so freaking gay. I'd like to see most the main characters of anime end up with no one for once.

-When the bad guy is simply crazy or just weird...(Creed from Black Cat, Papillion(?) from Buso Renkin, you know, the butterfly guy...)

-When the main character keeps getting stronger and no one know why he's so amazing! 😲

-Hot springs scenes 😀 They kinda get annoying after a while...they don't do them enough in shoujo...

-When the main character keep walking in on chicks in the bath...

I'm pretty sure most of what I said has already been mentioned ^_^;;

Shounen has a lot of great stories, I love the genre. But some typical cliches of shounen I dislike are:

  1. "Mock seriousness". Like, the fights are supposed to be life and death, but really, on the only people dying are characters who have used up all their potential, and it's always a touching scene. Where nobody dies by surprise, and every death has to be a plot device. You can always assume the main characters will survive, or if one dies, it'll be either totally by surprise, like they're stabbed in the back, or you'll have a ton of warning (including a touching farewell speech) before it happens.
  2. Manga where fights are just a big production, supposedly some sort of "self-expression". Isn't this just letting your ego run wild and stomp on the relevant aspects of the situation for the stupid purpose of trying to not have any regrets? Oh yeah, and if you fight to the death so you won't have any regrets, and then tomorrow I kill your family because you were too dead to save them, I hope you feel a bit of regret in hell. Yep.
  3. Related to #2 and the cliche about middle school gangs: The stupid idea that it's all about "living as a man". Basically Kuwabara from YuYuHakusho, except taken extremely seriously (I don't mind Kuwabara btw, he's a lovable doofus so I'm able to just think to myself, "Ahh, he means well"). Actually, I see this way more in shoujo manga. Makes sense, since if I were a girl and saw all these hot manly guys in gangs, I would want to give them a personality which justifies imagining a romance with them making sense, but if I just accepted that gangs are pretty much always just outlets for destructive youth culture, that would ruin my happy mood, yep. The whole "gang life" myth is something totally far from reality... It's a sort of behavior which has become so cliched in manga that we don't realize how bad it is until we step back. Being in a gang is very often a hurtful experience, just like you don't need to suddenly experience a makeover to get your relationships to work (maybe--I have no real experience but that seems like a better option).
  4. Ah, yeah. How could I forget. Transfer student. The worst ever implementation of the transfer student cliche, btw, has to be in Bleach, where the entirety of Soul Society suddenly entered... If transfer student is done right, then I don't mind it, like for instance Daisuke in the recent anime Mushi-Uta.

Ok didn't read all the previous posts but I have to mention this: I hate when a character that is cold-blooded and and merciless who is said to be the strongest ever, develops feelings of friendship/love and finally sees value in his own life rather than not giving a shit about it and becomes even stronger to beat people that are stronger than him. WTH you are the strongest in the beginning of the manga all the emotions make you weak.

Examples:

Samurai Deeper Kyo - average IMO

Kenshin - great manga but my favourite part is the flashback where he is the merciless Hitokiri

Chrno Crusade - Damn it you're a demon kill everything and who cares what happens to the girl. Hated the ending. Hehe not shounen but same complaint applies.

I guess the worst cliché is the fact that the main character is super lazy, dumb and what so ever, and his best friend is always the smartest, the greatest, good-looking and the most talented, but the main always surpasses him, even if he do nothing.

And there are the speeches. The hero is almost dead in the ground, and the villain, before giving him the final blow, starts speaking all his motivation to be the bad guy and his plan to conquer the world. And then the villain says: "After killing tou, I'll kill your best friend/girlfriend/family", the hero remembers some touching scene and will get a great power that will destroy the villain.

Oh, and a 10 sec fight can last almost forever, and there is always the "villain in the beggining that after lose to the hero discovers that he is not a bad person and comes to the "good side".

Geez, that's so annoying.

What about when the main character has become like the 2nd strongest guy in the whole manga, and the only one stronger is the bad guy, who's about 2 up to 20 times stronger... the only exception is when there are more than just one bad guy who's stronger. Examples: DBZ, Bleach (The only ones I can think of for now...) And not to mention that half the important characters could destroy the world like in DBZ...

If a the main character has a secret, only one person knows about it and usually this person wears glasses (Pretty Face, Midori no Hibi etc.)

Parents are often inexistent. For instance, in sports shounen they never come to root for their kids and so on.
