This week's poll was suggested by Nekomikoto. If you had the chance to change out your native language, would you? I guess you could always try to learn back your current native language, but it would be difficult...

You can submit poll ideas here
http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=3903

Previous Poll Results:
Question: Would you rather enhance your mind or body?
Choices:
Mind - votes: 2004 (63.9%)
Body - votes: 1133 (36.1%)
There were 3137 total votes.
The poll ended: March 4th, 2023 10:35am PST

Mind over matter

I am already fluent in 2 languages (English is not my native) i don't see much benefit to it... In fact not being able to talk to my mom properly would be annoying...

Yes. My native language is Russian and I can barely use it and don´t need it at all. Exchanging it for even a half-formed use of any other language is easily a plus. Giving the use of my secondary language - German or my tertiary - English is a no-go but I won´t need Germany anymore after I retire in over 3 decades so ask me again then. I mostly use it for work.

Uhm, I think no. I mean, I still live here, I work here, my family and friends are still here. How am I gonna communicate with my friends, colleague, and family? 😂

I also don't have the money to travel abroad and settle on that new country.

Plus there's no guarantee I would master this new language right away. I mean, Imagine if you lost your mothertongue. You got new language, but it's still beginner level. Just thinking it makes me shudder.

I still got English since it's not my mothertongue, but most people in my country doesn't speak English in daily life..

Nah. Too many loss there. 😂

I'll consider for a yes if I could suddenly reborn into another nationality. Lol

If fluent = native level I could see 'Yes' being a good answer for some people... Like if they're already estranged from the culture they were born into / hardly use their native tongue, and/or if their native language is considered easy to learn.

For a monolingual English-speaker like me, not so much.

I already speak two of the most common languages in the world fluently (English and Chinese), so exchanging either of those with another language with just be a net loss regardless of which language I get.

I do sometimes wish I could read/understand Japanese, though, but not enough to trade either English or Chinese for it... Especially since I need both of those for my current job.

I'm already relatively fluent in English and I don't really need to be fluent in other language to lose my native language mmm...

As someone whose native language is English, no. It's become the most useful language in the world, and as a writer I know that having to learn all the rules, rule breaks, etc. would be difficult.

Now, I used to also be fluent in "low German" but forgot entirely. :/

I voted no since my native language is Chinese and it's too useful. If I exchanged it for another language, it may be too hard for my brain to relearn Chinese again lol so I rather not

I know 4 languages. Native is Spanish, while I know: Japanese, German and Italian.
Japanese was the hardest to learn and it is a constant re-learn process ><

Even if I hated every single person who speaks my native language, or if they all died, thus leaving me no use for it whatsoever, I'd rather die than forget it, because Portuguese is the best language to ever exist on this planet.

I can't see this being useful to do unless you were moving permanently. Otherwise, you're alienating yourself. 😢

No.
I wouldn't even change even my least fluent language for another. It sometimes would be interesting knowing a non Romance language, but without the various POV/sources or cultural knowledge accumulated or even experience of using/learning said language it wouldn't be a worthwhile exchange.

I mean I've heard tons of people romanticising about other countries and I can totally see some people saying yes to this question and moving out to a certain country. Though is the exchange wasn't permanent I'd totally see myself swapping the language for a cultural immersion.

That'd mean I'd have to learn English again. I'm not doing that. Speaking from my multilingual friend's experience, it's like, one of the most difficult languages to become fluent in if you're not either born around or are very invested in learning it
