I wanted people's opinions on this.
It was said at the very start of the series that an attack from the tailed beasts is seen more or less like a natural disaster, they just happen from time to time and they always (more or less) have.
A lot of people seem to think Naruto's death kills the Kyuubi as well, provided it can't escape the seal. However surely if killing the host killed the demon they'd all be dead by now right?
Also kishi released that picture of all the jinchuriki, some of which had to be past hosts as their demons were free (such as the sanbi).
So when a host dies:

1. The demon dies too
2. The demon breaks free
3. The demon's chakra floats off and is eventually reborn/formed somewhere
4. Your theory?

I'm leading towards #3. If #2 were the case Konoha would be a lot more careful about not letting Naruto die, especially near home. Orochimaru wouldn't have been so eager to kill him when he was fighting Tsunade too

Also it's been said the biju become big, mindless animals if they're without a host too long. So do you think they just put up with the imprisonment sometimes to keep their minds?

Just wondering what people's thoughts on this are.

well i remember before the hosts died they transfered them to new hosts and that killed the present hosts..so basically the only way to kill a biju is to kill the host while the biju is inside cause then they will die with it

yeah that's pretty much what happened. from what i understand the extraction is what kills the Jinchuriki's. but the procedure is seemingly harmless to the Bijuu, i think. but on to the question, i think they die when the host die if it was outside of the extraction procedure that Akatsuki preforms. when Naruto almost died during that fight with all the 3 Sanin, the Kyuubi was about to die that time too. what ever fate befalls the Jinchuriki, it usually affects the Bijuu as well. so it's basically choice 1 in your list.
plus the theory of the Bijuu's being natural disasters is up to debate now too, considering Jiraya's final investigations was leading to a theory of the Kyuubi being summoned.
