why fan service is so hated ?

I hate fanservice because I feel like my intelligence is being insulted every time it shows up. It's the manga equivalent of the artist saying "look! what's that?" and then running away. We get fanservice because the artist is trying to distract us from the fact that the series itself is not that good. (But look at how hot the characters are! Who cares about the plot?!)
If it's an ecchi series, the fanservice is no big deal since it comes with the territory. I don't care for ecchi because a lot of it seems like it's aimed at the 12 year-old, just becoming interested in sex crowd. I'm way, way past being impressed by a little nudity at this point.
However, if it's a normal series that wants to throw in gratuitous panty shots & shower scenes, girls with unnatural melon-sized boobs, guys who are too pretty to be male, and other non-sexual ploys aimed only at pandering to the fans (i.e., giving an extra-popular character obvious, unnecessary panel time) then I start getting annoyed. As other people have said, fanservice does nothing but waste our time: instead of moving the story forward or spending some time working on the characterization, it's an insult when the mangaka decides to throw in a pointless onsen chapter for no other reason than to serve as an excuse for a little nudity.

Fanservice doesn't really bother me. It's when it's just repeatedly thrown in your face for no reason is when it gets annoying as shit. Like every other aspect of a story, you have to balance it out to keep it from getting stale.

That's how I was at first with the anime, but then it turned into straight goofiness as it went on. You remember that scene in the anime when Saeko did that "Matrix Tits" move? 🤣

replying to the first post,
"fan-service serve too little purpose. that make every dedicated fan-service panel a waste, or in your language, a crap."

There are times when too much fan-service ruins the whole plot. It kind of ruins the mood in a way.

Fan service is the reason I don't read harem manga anymore; it's literally retarded.
It's just a recycling of the same scenes in every manga OVER AND OVER.
- Girl comes out of shower, male leads sees her naked
- Girl falls and male lead ends up with a camel toe in his face
- Pantie shots EVERY CHAPTER 😔
- Either HUGE-racked girls or completely flat ones
- Indecisive as hell male lead
- Male lead that goes from ugly, unpopular, manbearpig ---> omfg what a heartthrob shlick time
- NO progression until the last ~5 chapters. Most harem manga could be finished by reading only chapters in my opinion actually, first 5 and last 5; everything else in the middle is filler trash.
There are SOME exceptions, but for the most part this is it. I stay away from most shounen for this reason; especially shounen romance which is probably the worst thing ever. I don't understand authors either; I'm pretty sure that most teenage boys would move from one girl to the next as it is difficult to say, "do I love this person" and know the answer but when it comes to "person A v. person B" decisions come very easy. If you've ever read Suzuka; that is probably the best shounen is EVER gonna get when it comes to romance, it has some realistic aspects to it and the main KNOWS that he loves that girl; plus the ending is also enjoyable.
Reason 1:
Some people value the story/plot of a manga highly, and whenever fanservice comes in, it takes up space for what could have been used for more plot-related matters. They see it as taking the shortcut to popularity by riding on the audience's perverseness instead of spending effort on making the plot deeper and more appealing in general. Fanservice = filler.
Reason 2:
Some people don't enjoy sex-related things. Or their tastes are more specific than panty shots and huge breasts.
Reason 3:
Some people don't like fanservice, moe, etc. because it's overdone and shows a lack of creativity.
Personally, I like fanservice only when it's well done. When it's not well done, it's like a joke that's not funny. I particularly like when the mangaka doesn't try to draw attention to it (in other words, it doesn't need to take up a page or two or more of freaking out male and/or "kyaa"-ing female). One Piece falls under this category. High School of the Dead is overall excessive, but also falls under this category. I personally liked the Matrix fanservice scene due to the creative absurdity of it.

Fanservice = filler.
This. Fan service, almost by definition, is done unnecessarily. Consider GTO and Rosario to Vampire, series with high ecchi content. GTO had relatively little fan service as the ecchiness was utilized as a tool in describing how perverted Onizuka or another character was and often used in comedic scenes. However, in Rosario To Vampire, the excessive panty shots, which iirc were often done during fight scenes did absolutely nothing to the story other than to visually attract readers.
Fan service is fine if done sparingly and actually adds to the overall experience of reading the manga. But if every damn chapter of a series is devoted to it coughRosariotovampirecough it almost seems that the mangaka is indirectly conceding that they hope the art will make up for other sub-par elements of the manga when attracting readers.

I love fan service!!!
one thing i always wonder though, do the japanese people really never lock their bathroom door when they go? they always get walked in on manga/anime. I realize this is generally for comedy purposes but it's just common sense to lock the door.
