Shounen romance that ends unexpectedly (spoilers obviously)

I've always disliked the harem manga and anime where you can predict the ending just by looking at the cast lineup and whichever girl is shown first wins. I've always dreamed about a manga where there's a long-running love triangle only to have the girl who randomly appears in the last two volumes steals the guys heart and leaves the heroines wondering WTF they've been doing.
Endings where the 'first girl doesn't win'. Something like Shuffle! or Ichigo 100%

then how is it shounen romance? love-triangles seems more of shoujo type. But I know what you mean. the settings are all there for a love triangle, but the idea of having a "Straight-forward" romance sounds more shounen then a love triangle, that most girls like. I, personally, don't like complexity, i'd rather have a predictable ending then an ending that has to explain so much. I came to be entertained, not given a chase where i must either hate the hero or the heroine then love them back again.

Hmm... I've never seen a shounen romance that was 'straight-forward'. You always have an indecisive male lead with love interests hidden under every rock. What I'm saying is are there any examples of the 'underdog' winning? (apart from my examples). Shoujo romance (from what I've seen) tends to be more straight-forward with a girl pursing a single guy, apart from the rare reverse harems.

I looked at it through the perspective of drama, and no, i have no idea what shoujo mangas you've read but im sure you've seen this scenario play, not most of them are straight-foward because as the girl may be pursuing one guy, another guy is pursuing them, not quite the triangle but a trinity nonetheless. Thus the story becomes complicating as the guy pursuing may end up failing, or the girl ends up failing, or both of them quits pursuing and ends up with no one. too much drama, 🙁 so distasteful really, Personally I wouldn't change a thing about the shounen series. if it started making things complicated, i would probably shoot myself because I could careless if he liked her but she like him but he like "her" >.> sigh* its good if its PURE comedy but not when its drama... please leave that to the poor actors you see in soap operas on TV when its really late at night....

Haven't read enough shounen romance manga to give you an answer, but Shuffle, Futakoi Alternative, and Canvas 2 anime (throw in Da Capo Second Season, if you haven't seen the first, and Da Capo 2, if you can stand it) all end unexpectedly if using the "traditional theorem of heroine success" at the start.
But really, last second reversals are lame.

Oh man, I remember Ichigo 100% years ago, when it was done, I felt empty, and I'm like show me more of NishinoxManaka[im a nishino fan]. But when I think back, the ending was quite perfect. That was a twist, I was afraid and sure that he would end up with Toujo so I was real happy with that twist.
And Adachi manga like you say, is quite vague, and it lets you think about what they probably ended up as, with hints of their wellbeing/future in the ending. When I read my first Adachi manga, I was like, what? so that's it, what happened to them omg?!
But truth is, most shounen manga, you can pretty much know who the main guy is gonna end up with. The only manga that I feel might hit a twist is Kimi no iru machi, I still don't know if he's gonna end up with kanzaki or eba.

yea but still, most of the romance shounen/seinen manga I read, you can figure out who he's gonna end up with within the first 2-5 chapters, maybe 10 if it's more "harder" to figure out...but I can't seriously figure it out yet for that manga, I hope he doesn't do it exactly like Suzuka.

How did I miss that one?! I was like "wtf?" when I got near the end, I totally didn't expect that but very good and unique manga, unlike most harems, that one left a "impact" in me that's for sure.

heh I thought this would be abou cancellations... cause then I could complain about the way inu neko jump ended.
But yeah Nishino ending up being the girl was unexpected. I didn't want tojo but at first Kitaoji was my favourite. But the way it ended really won me over. But the story really switched to being more about setting up a future. It did both pretty well.
I really can't think of many unexpected ones but that doesn't mean that the stories were generic either. Like Midori no Hibi or love hina, gatcha gatcha, I"s, Kimagure orange road ect.
I just thought of No Bra. Where its a typical romance and where its obvious but its still pretty funny... cause y'know.
Oh well I still feel like I failed to think of anything and I've given it some thought for a few minutes. So now I'm interested if anyone can think of one too.
edit: That show " this ugly yet beautiful world" came to mind. The love interest ends up leaving the planet and going to outer space to probably kill a civilization somewhere. Then again I don't think the show handled its generic elements with its attempt at doing something different well.
