In Poland most preferable is vodka but if we are talking about "national drink" i would go with Mead.
Ist rly not very popular because it's more expensive and weaker than vodka but in taste is much better. (Man! This is liquid honey with alcohol, there is no better thing) I strongly recommend "półtorak" ^^

In India we have toddy (made from palm tree sap) and a whole bunch of other types of alcohol made from local plants. Most people drink really cheap local whiskey or vodka though.

In England I'm not sure we're particularly associated with a certain alcohol, though cider (apple cider, but occasionally pear cider) is very popular in the west country and brewed extensively there. (It is not a particularly popular drink in most of the country, however; beer is more popular as far as I am aware)

Pimm's also seems to be a very British thing; I believe it is gin-based and most people mix it with lemonade and certain fruit.

I remember drinking a lot of homemade rice wine (most commonly 米酒) as a kid in China. It was delish (especially black rice wine). I really miss it now.

Gin's probably the closest (google "Gin Epidemic"), as you stated later in your post, even if it was invented by the Dutch. The English also invented many of the darker beers, or Porter, which the Irish perfected into stout (Guinness) later on.

Iceland has this drink called Black Death (loose translation).
The Egyptians invented mead, I believe.
Balkans have various types of plum liquor/brandy.
Not sure if they invented it, but snake wine is synonymous with Vietnam.

For Danes (and as far as I know, Swedes as well) I guess "Snaps" could be considered our national drink. Best accompanied with a huge celebration dinner.

In Germany....well ok beer is consumed by a lot of people. But wine, too. I'm from a part of Germany where a lot of wine is produced. And in winter people drink glühwein. Hot wine with spices like cinnamon, clove and a lot of other stuff in it. I don't really like it 😛 ooh and in autum there's federweisser and roter rauscher. very yummy and sweet wines or rather grape musts 🙂

So the "national drink" would just be tea or coffee. With all their variant.

The thread is about national alcohol, not national drink. And while it is true that most of Indonesian are muslim, but tuak is already a part of tradition/ lifestyle in some tribe in Indonesia long before the religion came to Indonesia, and is still a part tradition/ lifestyle for some people. And if you're talking about the national drink, it should be jamu, right?

"półtorak" sound nice. I tend to dislike alcohol, but liquid honey with alcohol sound sound impossible to resist.

oh... i see.... then i believe you misunderstood indonesia.
just because the majority of indonesian population is muslim, it doesn't mean there are no one drink alcohol here... it also doesn't mean we don't have a brewery (or winery)
two example: bintang beer, hatten wine..... and the traditional arrack and tuak maker.
