Looking for suggestions for a seven year old, who reads like a nine year old, and is crazy about machines. Not as blackboxes, but in actually breaking down machines in how things work.
Thanks.

yes, manga
I suggest checking out Ed U. Manga's reading lists, one of which is here. Works are rated on a 1-4 scale from noneducational to educational. Works on the wish list haven't been vetted by other people on the Ed U. Manga team so those aren't rated, and the project is kinda dead so may never be rated. One of the works on the wish list is Manga Science which looks kinda like what you're looking for but I know more humanities and sports educational manga than hard sciences so I can't really help you there. This is the best I got, sorry I couldn't have been more help.
Edit: Apparently Amazon has educational and non-fiction manga here. And there's one on microprocessors here.

So far he is liking the car racing in the animated version of Initial D.
If he likes Initial D then try out the Capeta anime or manga which starts with elementary school aged kids getting into go karting and onwards towards formula 1 driving.
