I'm not sure about the classic tag, but Cesare by Souryou Fuyumi has strong research with the setting. It can be boring because it is too political and there is no dramatization of the conflict. And since the manga is on an indefinite hiatus, I don't recommend trying it right away.

Emma by Kaoru Mori. It's a historical and slice of life. It offers subtle romance and quite realistic setting of the people at that time.

Shanao Yoshitsune by Sawada Hirofumi. I highly love this around japenese setting around Heian era. If you don't mind the genre (shounen). It's great.
