As the title indicates, I'm looking for a website similar to mangaupdates but lists current and past animes instead of mangas/manhaws and has the same function of being able to mark the manga you are currently reading.

I've never used it, but... myanimelist.net?

Baka-updates.com, this site's sister site, also shows all the recent fansub releases, but I don't think you can mark which ones you're watching.

I do wish baka-updates was more end-user friendly with lots of features like manga-upadates is but for some reason it's not.

AniDB and AnimePlanet are THE most "complete" sites (to my knowledge)
If you're a "basic" user, and only really want to keep track of what you've watched (assuming you always watch in sequential order) AnimePlanet will suffice.
The interface is really user friendly, though the database content tends to be a bit behind that of AniDB and it has no real keyword system in place (which I consider vital). New episodes take a few days to be added for some series (so you can't always mark them immediately, wait a day or two)... which is not a problem if you don't watch "live" on TV or the minute a group puts a release online.
The other downside is that the "newer" (currently running) Anime often lacks detailed information like a description or images.

If you want to keep track of Anime you've downloaded or want more control over which episodes you've watched from which releases (including specials), AniDB is a very useful tool, especially in combination with WebAOM or the plain AOM (if you're on windows).
I use it often to verify downloaded episodes, automatically correct naming, and check for corruption (AniDB keeps track of file hashes).
AniDB's database is by far the better of the two and has much more contributors in it's userbase (which helps in keeping things up to date).
The downside is that it's a bit less user-friendly and a bit overkill for the average user.

Both have their up and downsides, try them both, but keep in mind that you can't simply export/import between the two (making it hard to migrate large collections).

It's been awhile since I revisited this thread and I'm really grateful to you Sir/Mam "Joentjuh" for a very detailed explanation and comparison AniDB and AnimePlanet. As of now I'm using AniDB for the purpose of keeping track of all the anime's I have in my collection be it downloaded or bought online. And yes it's overkill for the average me but I'm still gradually learning.
