Has anyone of you read the stories about Conan the Cimmerian by Robert Ervin Howard? What's your opinion of them? Which are your favorite stories?
I just started reading them and I really like them so far. The main theme of the stories is the clash of civilization and barbarism. Conan is a pure barbarian, living for the moment. Here is a quote from "Queen of the Black Coast" (Conan is talking to his beloved Bêlit about what comes after death):
"I know not, nor do I care. Let me live deep while I live; let me know the rich juices of red meat and stinging wine on my palate, the hot embrace of white arms, the mad exultation of battle when the blue blades flame and crimson, and I am content. Let teachers and priests and philosophers brood over questions of reality and illusion. I know this: if life is illusion, then I am no less an illusion, and being thus, the illusion is real to me. I live, I burn with life, I love, I slay, and am content."
Conan is the type of male hero I like. Take the latest chapter of Gantz (282) for example: Kurono meets a guy who has bullied him in the past. He wears his power-suit, so he could beat the shit out of the guy. And what is he doing: He doesn't want to hurt him, so he lets the guy beat and humilate him without defending himself!
What would Conan have done in this situation? Irrespective of the fact that no one could have bullied Conan in the first place, he would have split the head of this guy the instant he saw him. That's the way I want a leading character to act!
We weep for a bird's cry, but not for a fish's blood. Blessed are those with a voice.
