Is it rude to use emoticons like 😛 in emails?

Just wondering. I used that emoticon in an email to an official - not government official - and after it was sent, I was aorried it would seem rude.

The other person is possibly an official, or a college student.
Was I rude?! 🙁

EDIT: Sorry for the double post, I forgot 🤢 I'll take better care in the future.

So yes, it's rude. However you might be lucky if it's a college student who read it, or an official in a great mood, they might overlook it.

Just stop thinking about it and let it slip. It would mess things up more if you started trying to take the emoticon back. 😛 But yeah, for things as school and work, emoticons should be left out if you want to be taken more seriously. That's how I see it.

Right. What if I send another mail apologising, citing my lack of netiquette knowledge, or put that in the next email I exchange?

As I said before, I think it's best you don't do anything about it and just refrain from using emoticons when you have to write something that should be considered serious work etc. 😃 Don't worry too much about it.

K, I'll do that.
Sigh, let's hope the person reading the mail is in a good mood. 🤢

Thanks, everybody 😛

Yeah. What's done is done. If it was a college student / graduate student / TA... you'll be fine since they're students too!! If it's an administrator or professor... then it depends... but I'm sure that they get emoticon slips pretty often from their own students who email them.

No need to send an apology email follow-up. Just try to refrain from using it unless you know the person personally.

Emoticons make the email seem less serious I find. I've used emoticons when I emailed one of my tutors, but that's because she was that type of person. She even sent me one back with a =P emoticon within it 🤣

Otherwise, if you want your email to seem serious, avoid them. No point in crying over spilt milk though. It's just an emoticon it's not the end of the world.
