i like this manga and just wanted to know why it was on hiatus
I believe the mangaka has recently started work on a new series, TriageX, though i kind of wish he'd finished this HotD first, I'm also a big fan.
Can't remember for the life of me what the new series is about but i'm assuming he put HotD on hiatus to write it. Hoping he comes back to HotD sooner rather than later.

As a reminder, the artist of HotD is not the writer. He still does HotD color features for the magazine the series runs in so it's clear he hasn't given up on it or gotten bored with it. I don't want to point fingers, but it's more likely the writer's fault the series is on hiatus (I've heard he has a reputation for doing this... but I can't say for sure). There's really no telling what'll happen to the series down the line, but hopefully its hiatus won't be as long as, say, Iinari! Aibration's was (18 months).
My impression is that Triage X is like a placeholder for HotD. It's very similar in tone and style.

I don't really have respect for mangaka that leave work unfinished to start off other things. I believe in the 1 title until the end rule. Finish this, then go off to do other stuff...

The writer probably runs into writers block for some of his series. I know a lot of authors will go back and redo the start of a book like 5-10 times because they don't like it or how it started. Some even start a book completely over.

But doesn't that mean that the writer didn't plan their story out that well if they have to go back and redo the beginning or start it all over again?

I know some authors that do series just plan the start and the end and the major points everything between them just comes when it does you could say. I'm betting this mangaka is just like that. Knows the start and the end. Probably which chars are going to do or not. Same with family too. But everything in the middle or filler you could say is not planned yet.
By filler I mean the Mall. Nothing important has really happened except gun guy having feelings for the cop.

I understand what you mean now. And I really hated that cop Asami. She kept talking in 3rd person (Which to me, was more annoying than cute), and then her just acting like a bitch to Kohta after her superior officer Matsushima died was uncalled for. If this manga isn't canceled and is still ongoing, then I'd like to see her dead soon. >:-(

She's probably gonna die at the mall or they're just gonna leave her. I believe the plan is for the gang to take whatever supplies they can from the mall and leave with or without the people there. Most likely without though.
