Okay, this topic is like discussing... THE GREAT YAOI MANGAKA! (no one might even discuss, but heck like i care). SO! i LOVE minami's art and her story/yaoi! Even though some are straight bed scenes which i'm not really that interest, some have great plots with nice hot and cute bishies biggrin

so love love love and discuss.

Yayyy! Minami-sensei has been my fav since about 1999. I first came across her work on the site YAOI-HELL, which has long been offline, but was the gateway drug to my shota/YAOI obsession. It wasn't until many years later that I actually read her work scanlated...think it was "Liking You" scanlated by Obsession, and it was the first time I found a translated YAOI work to be more erotic than untranslated. Her dialog is just soooo awesome!!!!

Here's a really old icon I made for livejournal...probably the first time I did anything in photoshop, so please forgive the quality. lol

Though after looking at Junk!Boys, the style does seem very familiar to me O.o....I did buy a lot of yaoi in the 2001-2004 years...i might go looking in the attic to see if i have any up there, just hope my wife doesn't catch me...-.-...

Minami Haruka's work is a little too excplicit for me......I prefer manga like Animal X series and Okane and Koori no mamono no monogatari.

Koori isn't really yaoi but it's one of my favorites. It's this one that made me decide to learn japanese so I could buy the 24 volumes of it. I've got a looooong way to go before I can do that though.cry
As for Minami Haruka's work is so hot it's almost scandalous. I love it! I think I've found every single piece of her work that has been scanlated. To bad almost none of it seems to interest publishers.

ok, so here are some minami lovers, and that means i can ask y'all exactly what you like about her art? she has so many fans, and i can't understand why. is it something i am not seeing? if you rather not actually discuss but just want to squee amongst yourselves just tell me to butt out. smile i don't want to rain on anyone's parade, and i am not critical of those who like her; different strokes and all.

me, i find her art so sketchy that i can't remember a single character from any of her works; they all look so very young and so alike -- yeah, the uke is always even smaller and skinnier than the seme, but from one seme to the next i can't tell the difference. this isn't uncommon with inexperienced mangaka, but she's done a lot of work, and with many other experienced mangaka i can usually name several characters, and pick them out of a lineup, but with her i sometimes don't even remember their names while reading a multi-chapter story, and i find them hard to distinguish even within the story. i don't find her art ugly, mind, just ... she doesn't do lots of expressions either, and that it leaves me not feeling anything.

i'm afraid i have the same criticism about her writing -- none of her storylines stand out to me as something memorable, and her dialogue is very "standard skank" in her sex scenes.

oh, and i hate her predilection for dressing her uke in women's underwear, but that's definitely a personal taste issue.

on the plus side she does at least not do ken dolls, but her boys, even if they look more androgynous than manly, at least have a penis, and are not shy about using it. i appreciate that because i really dislike half-hearted censorship in otherwise very explicit stories.

You bring up many good points there, pleo (can I call you pleo? XD), some I just can't deny. I read her stories pretty fast and most of the time I can't really remember the storyline, let alone the characters, but some still stand out to me, like the ones I listed above in this topic. And I'm good with names of anime and manga characters! mad

Anyway, although her characters and the majority of her storylines are rather cliche (I apologize, Minami-sensei! >.<), I can't help but love the art! I find it very beautiful and it stands out from the other badly drawn yaoi I've read. In fact, I probably would not have read as many of Minami-sensei's works had I not liked the art so much. All her bishies are so beautiful!!! biggrin I'm not really sure what about her art I like so much. I just do. It's kinda unexplainable ^_^'''

She doesn't do lots of expressions? confused I think she does! eyes (like in heardtheowl's signature biggrin)

"Standard skank" biggrin...I found that very funny laugh Anyway, the most explicit yaoi I've read is Minami-sensei's work, so I guess it's pretty original to me smile wink grin

thanks for replying, even though i was critical of one of your faves; i really appreciate it. and sure, you can call me "pleo", *heh*.

as i thought, it's something i am not seeing in her art; that which you call "beautiful" seems to completely pass me by. it's difficult to define what one likes about art, isn't it. at least for non-art majors. i think i generally have trouble liking very sketchy art styles. for example, i love yamakami riyu's stories; she's one of my very favourites, but her art doesn't do a whole lot for me; it's sketchy in a rough way with hard edges, and her characters don't look very unique either (though more so than minami-sensei's). and miyamoto kano -- at first i didn't like her b&w art at all; it is so loose. but then i noticed how incredibly nuanced her expressions are, and how unique that makes her characters even though she uses so few and such loose lines (compared to say, nitta youka) and now i don't even see how i couldn't have liked her art at one point. generally if the art style isn't sketchy but well-defined i tend to like it much more easily.

i didn't mean to say minami-sensei doesn't do expressions at all, just that they don't seem to contain much nuance, especially her seme. this is hard to explain without pictures. smile they seem to only have a few expressions at their disposal. the uke have a few more, but they too are very ... standard, from a small repertoire. right now i am thinking that almost none of the seme smile either, but surely i've got to be wrong about that. i've got to go through my collection and double-check.

so to compare -- who do you think draws badly? whose art don't you like? (i don't think she draws badly, just to make that clear -- she's definitely competent, probably more so than yamakami riyu who still has some problems with getting proportions right from certain angles).

No problem, pleo biggrin ^_^ I like how you plunged boldly into a sea (maybe not that big) of fangirls and didn't really mind if you got bit at smile Ah, so you're an art major? Wow, ahaha, I'm not even in college! biggrin

After reading Yamakami Riyu's Tobu Kokoro, I completely stayed away from her. It was such a bore, I couldn't even finish the last quarter of a chapter and deleted it off my hardrive. I don't even remember the story or any of the characters! It wasn't really the art (which I don't remember much either), but...something just wasn't keeping me awake no The art was a bit off. Something about their faces was strange and everyone seemed faded. Ah, sorry for ranting a bit ^_^''' I'm not a harsh judge of manga, I really try my best to like it, but when I come across something that just isn't my taste, I get annoyed.

I think the thing with Minami-sensei's expressions, is that there is just so much sex in her stories and less plot that she ends up using the same expressions biggrin But no, seriously. It's pretty much true. PWPs are her thing.

I think a good example of bad art is...Maniakku ni Aishite. When I read that manga, I loved it and I still love it. It's so adorable, and I just love pretty much everything about it, except...occasionally the art got a little too rough dead A few times I swear it was a little hard to look at! I tried reading other manga of the same mangaka, but I discovered that it's all the same. I guess Maniakku is Higashino Yuu's latest work cuz her other stories' art are even worse. I mean, you can tell her art is improving and I applaud her for writing such a good story, but her other stuff still makes me cringe occasionally.

To contrast Higashino Yuu would be Takanaga Hinako. I think Takanaga Hinako is amazing. Her stories, the art, the characters, I love it all! The art is beautiful, even more so to me than Minami-sensei's. She is my absolute favorite yaoi author. When I bought volume 3 of Takanaga-sensei's Little Butterfly, I showed my sister the art, to see if maybe she would agree with me about it being beautiful, but when she said "it looks pretty average to me" I was a little surprised, so I looked at it from a different perspective and really, she's right. Maybe not average, but it's not the best either. I guess I make Takanaga-sensei's art sound overrated, but I really just can't stop myself from loving it so much. Something about it just makes my heart flutter =^.^=

Anyway, um, is this bothering anyone? I know we're getting a bit off-topic, so...maybe we should start a new topic, pleo? confused So then other people can join us too biggrin

Nah. Not bothering me, at least! ^_^ I like an intelligent discussion to read, and although I really know NOTHING about art, I love Mimami-sensei's work wholeheartedly.

The reason I love it, is as Pleo (by the way - love your icon) stated, hard to define. I love the softness of it, I see elegance in the characters' body types, that the characters are beautiful and androgynous. I'm a shota lover who doesn't really like the "shota" aspect, just the look of it, if that makes any sense. confused

Another of my very very favorite mangakas is Yamato Nase, who also draws very young and beautiful characters. It's just the style I love.

Lets see. Art I really don't like...Sakura Ashika, and I know she has loads of fans, but I don't really like Nitta Youka. There are others I really hated the art to, but I deleted them and can't remember.
roll eyes

Again, I believe that liking or disliking a particular mangaka's style is the same as liking or not liking a song or painting. It's personal preference and there is no predefined formula...but again, I don't know sh*t about art. lol

EDIT: to add this icon I made for Yamato Nase's works. smile wink grin
