Manga Artist Haruka Minami Cancels Yaoi-Con Visit Due to "Health Concerns"

The annual boys love manga /anime fest Yaoi-Con 2009 is scheduled to kick off this Friday, October 30 at the San Mateo Marriott Hotel in Northern California, but according to an announcement posted on their website today, Guest of Honor Haruka Minami will not be in attendance, "due to health concerns." It was not clear if Minami-sensei is feeling ill, or has concerns about swine flu, an issue that bedeviled many convention guests and organizers this year.

Minami-sensei, the creator of boys love stories such as My Paranoid Next Door Neighbor from 801 Media / Digital Manga Publishing (which is credited to her under her other pen name, Kazuka Minami) was announced as Yaoi-Con's guest back in April 2009, so this last-minute change is sure to be a disappointment to U.S. fans who had hoped to meet her at this show.

Yaoi-Con organizers are asking fans to write messages to Minami-sensei in a sketchbook that they'll have available at the show. They're also requesting that any gifts fans wish to be forwarded to Minami-sensei be "small, non-perishable items." Fans can also enter a raffle for special prints that Minami-sensei will be sending to the Yaoi-Con organizers.

If you're planning to attend Yaoi-Con in San Mateo, California on October 30 - November 1, 2009, be aware that the Bay Bridge, one of the main transportation arteries to San Francisco is closed "indefinitely" after a piece of the recently constructed bridge bypass snapped and fell onto cars during rush hour on Tuesday afternoon. Allow more time than usual to travel to Yaoi-Con, and be prepared for traffic congestion and detours.

But don't let these snafus discourage you too much from attending Yaoi-Con. Manga artists Makoto Tateno and Kano Miyamoto are still slated to attend, and there's a full weekend of fun just waiting for girls/boys who love boys who love boys.

Pre-registration is closed, but for $60.00 at the door, you can enjoy a whole weekend of events, or if you're content to just enjoy the show for a single day, it'll cost @$10.00 for Friday, $35.00 for Saturday and $25.00 for Sunday only.
