I don't mind if a series is long as long as there are still good developments happening. If it starts to drag and get repetitive then I'll drop it. I can't force myself to keep reading something even if I already invested a lot of time in it already. If I really want to know how it ends I'll just wait for spoilers to come out.

Yeah but I haven't really done so that much. I probably will start doing it more though. High school = less time to read manga. Also, very long series just... drone on and they lose their spark and creativity sometimes. I also drop series if the ecchiness level just starts to actually bother me.

GAH! My plot doesn't bend that way!

I did this with School Rumble. I read the first 6 chapters and I was curious to see how many chapters it had. When I found out it had 283 of them (That's too damn long for a romance manga), I just decided to skip to the end. Seems like nothing got resolved, so I'm glad I didn't waste my time reading the rest of them.

I am really not conserned about length of manga that much, but generally I tend to prefer longer series, so whenever I pick up a new series I usually prefer it to have at least 5 or more volumes out already.
The reason for this preference is because I read manga to spend time, so of course longer series means I can use more time to it.

Of course I read shorter mangas as well, but when picking new series to read I prefer to choose a longer one. Because if it is no good I can drop it, but if it is good I can enjoy it a lot longer than a short one and not spend the time I could be reading a manga I like in effort to find another manga to read.

hhmm...I don't think I ever dropped a series because of that, I'm the same with LunaMay, I prefer to put it on hold or practically I just left it in my reading list and not touch it for a long time...but I still have the wish to finish reading them, I must finish anything that I started(if I can bear it)
erm, I just realized something, I usually put manga that are long, on hold...like Vampire Knight, Special A, Hana Yori Dango, Ouran and Mekakushi no Kuni well >_>', for you guys maybe they can't be considered long, but for me it's different..it seems that I have somehow lost interest..ACK 😲 uuughh, not good and weird 😐
But I think, I will continue reading them one day..except for Hana Yori Dango, I totally dropped this one

I don't usually, I have to know how it ends. Of course there are exceptions.

Ever stopped reading a series for a while because it was dragging on? Inuyasha

At the later parts of Inuyasha I stopped for like 20-30 chapters at times and then went back...not much changed since naraku was still alive, so just put it off for another 20-30 weeks until I felt like reading it again.

The one I can think of is Prince of Tennis.
Too long, too many characters and it became really ridiculous... I managed to read up to volume 16 or so though... damn, I totally wasted my time...

Ppl will probably kill me for saying this but PoT is the worst sports manga I've ever read.

I don't care about a manga's length, but after awhile I'm usually committed to seeing it to the end, anyway if i got far enough that it's a commitment then yea... usually if i don't like it ill drop it after the first few chps.

You know, now that it's over, I went to read the last 10 chapters or so (right as the battle with Naraku starts), and I'm totally satisfied with skipping the majority of the middle. I knew the basics of the story from the pieces of the anime I've seen (the characters, the difference in the 2 swords, the jewel, etc.), so fast-forward to the end to see the battle, and it was all good. I doubt I'll read through the whole thing. That's way too many volumes to think about it.

Yeah I remember reading Inuyasha because it was the first anime I ever saw but then after 10 volumes I stopped and I'm glad I did because so many people told me it was dragging on far too long and the plot became pointless. I couldn't believe it ended when I read people talking about it in different forums, so I decided to try reading the last few chapters and it turns out I didn't really miss much. And I was satisfied with the ending it did the series justice even if it was a long wait.

oh, yeah. i've dropped sooooo many series because they were too long (inuyasha, naruto, one piece...). i also find short ones boring because there is rarely any "real" development. i don't really consider 20 volumes to be that long...

20 volumes can be long, depending on the story.
Fruits Basket ended at 23, and I think it was a great length.
Kaikan Phrase, on the other hand, I got really bored with the repitition around volume 11, and I can't bring myself to go back to it. (I'm really curious about the anime though, since it's more about the band than Aine and Sakuya.)
Sorry, I don't have good examples from shounen/seinen, though I think Double Arts could've been spectacular if it hadn't been dropped so early.

It really does all depend on the story. If you have something to tell, tell it, and don't drag it out. You'll keep people happier. I'm not sure why authors or animators think that people want to see 4 episodes/chapters worth of a single battle (and only 4 is going easy in some cases). If there's no point other than 'action' (no serious advancement of plot or character development), you're wasting trees and my time otherwise. 😔

I never get bored reading Hajime No Ippo. And Jojo's Bizarre Adventure too, features new characters and storyline for each arc, so it is never boring.

I guess it is ultimately depends on the person's taste
