This week's poll was suggested by Naruto Gogi. Do you prefer to read stuff as it comes out or wait to binge?
You can submit poll ideas here: https://www.mangaupdates.com/topic/kilkdnn/site-manga-poll-suggestions
Question: If you're reading an original story by a Japanese author but it's online-only and formatted in a vertical strip with full color, what do you call it?
Choices:
- Manga - votes: 551 (28.5%)
- Webcomic - votes: 655 (33.9%)
- Webtoon - votes: 650 (33.7%)
- Other - votes: 74 (3.8%)
There were 1930 total votes. The poll ended: September 13, 2025
The way I understand it, webtoons are a subset of webcomics. Webtoons are vertical strip webcomics

Time constraints exist obviously but I do make it a point to keep myself up to date both on written as in animated media before resuming an ongoing read or picking something new. Half is I like to be able to enjoy discussions on release, and the other half is that I don't like binge culture. Of course, I treat the releases as they are, well, released, some series release by chapters, and other as volumes. I would consider binge to wait to read a whole volume of a scanlated manga, but not to read a whole licensed tankobon, for example. Finally, I hate double/triple length anime chapters, let alone binging a whole season. I don't think I would watch a seasonal that releases all at once.

It really depends on the series. When I read Tsubasa Chronicles weekly I felt like I was dying at the slow pace, but when I later binged the series I enjoyed it way more. In comparison, I’m enjoying Witch Watch every Sunday, and I think if I tried to binge it I would burn out. I think Rumiko Takahashi series are like this too—much better if you read a chapter a week.

I like to read weekly, and engage in speculation with the community. But I tend to forget various things I'm reading and suddenly notice I have 5-6 chapters I missed.

I am on mangaupdates to get manga updates. It's shocking to me how many people picked full volumes
Guys, if your favorite series isn't good week to week, then find a more engaging series?? I've been reading One Piece weekly since 2004. There's a reason that series that aren't enjoyable week to week get quickly cancelled in Jump.

I read when I have time, so it doesn't really matter to me.

To me it really doesn't matter. I'm always finding some new series to read and it often has a lot of chapters out already, so I'll binge them all, then check back periodically for updates whenever it comes to mind - same with all my other series. That said, if a series is new and it only has one or two chapters out, I rarely bother to read it. So maybe I do prefer to binge.......
