Hi guys!

I've asked this question before, though I still wasn't able to find this manga/manhua, so here's a new topic for it:

I'm looking for a specific cooking manga/manhua (can't remember). It's about a travelling cook. Some of the scenes that I can remember are:

  • A curry cooking competition (as main attractions of two different shopping malls). There's a scene where he added cheese to the curry to make it less spicy. His rival was someone who could prepare the exact same curry as he did after tasting his. In the end, he won (with his super spicy curry + cold water), while his rival ended up using poison to lure his customers.

  • Nabe competition on a train. There's this scene where he opened up the doors of the train so that his guests can enjoy the nabe + scenery

  • Some form of dangerous culinary, where the dishes have to be consumed in a particular order to prevent food-poisoning. One of the victims started throwing up halfway through, while the protoganist was impressed by the balance of the dishes (eating the dishes in order helps prepare the stomach, etc). Think the hostess was wearing a beautiful kimono in this arc.

  • In one scene, some (bad) stuff happens, and a woman skinny dips out of a boat into the water to escape a bad guy, and was rescued by the protoganist. I think it was before a culinary competition, and the protoganist sweared that he was going to beat the bad guy.

  • I remember there's one scene that involved pufferfish, but I can't be sure

Please note that it's NOT:

  • Addicted to Curry (there;s a similar curry competition scene, but still not the same manga. This guy did ALL kinds of cooking)
  • Cooking Master Boy (have read this all the way till volume 17. Not this)
  • That Jan manga (the guy who used chicken blood to make desserts)

And it's definitely not Shoujo. I'd say its art is very similar to shounen mangas (not those chibi/huge-eyed charas) and has some pretty mature scenes/themes. Seriously can't remember if it was comedy or not, but iirc, the main character is like the guy from Addicted Curry (with his pervertness toned down).

Finally, one last clue: I remember reading this BEFORE 2003, and could've been even earlier .

Please help. Have been scouring the web for this with no avail. Thanks!!!

Only manga involving curry that I can think of is Karei naru Shokutaku. But maybe Shirogane no Karasu.

mrs_choco:

hi! Actually, I DID went through that post. In fact, that was one of the very post that I found when searching the forums before deciding to post a new thread. Unfortunately, none of the ones listed in the thread was what I'm looking for. Oishinbo sounds interesting, but after a quick look at it, I realise that the character designs are different.

Thanks. Never heard of shokutaku, but I've a feeling it's not what I want (will try to read it nonetheless though). As for addicted to curry, I'm actually following the series as well, and I'm 100% it's different.

The manga/manhua that I'm looking for only had 1 curry competition (between supermarkets). The rest were different types of culinary.

aneste:

Not too sure about tensai ryouri shounen (though it does look interesting), however, I'm 100% that I've seen Houchounin ajihei before. Although I can't confirm if it's the one that I'm looking for, I can't exactly say otherwise either.

All I know is, I've seen it before, and IIRC, most of the cooking manga that I've read (and am trying to find again) have not disappoint me yet, so I'm rather excited to have found another one.

Even if this does not end up being the one I'm looking for, it should still satiate my craving for cooking manga for a while.

Thanks!!

in the mean time, I'm all ears/eyes to any cooking manga titles. For me, there can never be too many cooking mangas.

It sounds alot like Sik Gaek (Gourmet), an award-winning cooking manwha. I'm pretty sure it's NOT, but the general description sounds similar and there was a scene where one person used pufferfish. A brief synopsis:

The story starts with a flashback to the last king of Korea. He informs his staff that he will soon step down. The Royal Chef is told to prepare a last meal for the king. Filled with sorrow, the Chef makes a delicious meal, filled with love for his country and king. The king, moved by the Chef's love, decrees that the Chef be given his own resteraunt as one of his last actions. The story then goes to modern Korea. Sung-chan is the adopted son of the current head of the Royal Resteraunt of Korea, recognized as the best resteraunt in Korea. Bong Joo, his older brother and the real son of the head, works as the main Sous Chef (kinda like assistant to the head chef but with alot more authority than assistant implies), while Sung-chan works as line chef (basically the bottom of the chain). The head is very old, and is expected to officially announce Bong Joo as the next head soon. When he announces instead that he will hold a cooking competition to determine the next head, everyone is shocked.

I won't tell too much more because I don't wanna spoil anything. Anyway, Sung-chan volunatrily withdraws in the middle of the competition becomes a food peddler, traveling all over Korea and learning all about its food.

Alot of the scenes you mentioned are similar to what's in Sik Gaek though. Like the part where the guy opens a window to enjoy the scenery with the food, and the part where the specific order someone eats something matters.
