If it helps, there was some kind of letter or something involved in the story. It might have been a text from a cell-phone though. Super vague, I know, but it’s a twist ending kind of similar to the feeling of the one you suggested!

Also, oddly enough, I remember it being kind of innocent too. The art seemed a little shoujo!
