I wanted to share with you this upcoming book:
1952-2012 : STORIES OF MODERN MANGA
Quoting from their KS campaing:

"The most complete, easy-to-read book about modern manga, extensive enough for die-hard readers with simple storytelling for everyone!"

Manga culture has already been thoroughly examined in many books and essays, mostly through aesthetic and thematic analysis. We've read most of these books – and some were really great and quite helpful at the beginning of our work as journalists. However, over time, we found out that something was missing: a book to explain how Japanese comic artists had built, year after year, a prominent culture tied to the Japanese history, society and pop-culture.

This book aims to answer that big question: how historical, social and cultural facts have affected the evolution of the manga medium? The book is focused on manga, their aesthetics, their stories and meaning. But its unique chronological approach will aim at showing them under a new light.

STORIES OF MODERN MANGA is designed to be read with a dual entry system: either double-page to double-page or page by page. Read only the left ones and you will learn about the social and historical aspects of manga culture. Read only the right ones and you will discover the incredible diversity of styles and themes manga has to offer, through portraits of manga’s most talented artists.

I'm not affiliated in any way with project6060 that plans to edit and publish that book, aside from being a modest backer on KickStarter.

Edit: the hypertext link was NOT broken. the displayed address was suffering from a bbcode autoformat and was not proper, that's all.

The KS campaign failed. They are trying to propose a French Edition only for now:
